I chose to write my response on Vera, Chenghong and Anvay’s project and honestly I wish I was able to see their presentation because I thought the idea was really smart and reflects a lot about our modern consumer behaviors. I really liked how they used AI to not only generate the initial product idea but the consequent product image, product description and testimonials as well. This generative and sequential iterative process of arriving at a final “fake” product really shows just how a lot of hype can be generated around a product or service that hasn’t actually been user-tested or exist yet. How many times have you purchased an item off Amazon simply because it has good ratings and have reviews from seemingly credible sources but seem awfully similar to these AI-generated reviews? I think this piece is a really simple but effective way of poking fun at both today’s product design landscape as well as consumer culture and how it is important to always take product reviews online with a grain of salt.
