I got the chance to into the City Science department at the MIT Media Lab this weekend and I was able to see some super cool data and visual indicators projected onto architectural scale models. The information overlaid by the projection can be dynamic visual elements such as cars and pedestrians but also static elements such as trees and concentration blocks. The opaque, blank scale models are imbued with digital information and provide another layer of complexity to these representational tools.
This was a live visual produced in TouchDesigner. The camera’s live feed is put through a series of nodes to create the geometric, Minecraft-like filter. I like when artists incorporate the camera into their work because it allows the audience to become part of the art itself and not simply an observer but instead a participant.
