I wrote the strip in Hebrew and wanted it to stay this way because most things don’t translate as well as I wanted. I will try to make an English version later on but I’ll use this post to explain the events described in each illustration.

I first arrived in Italy on the first day of the pandemic on February 21st of 2020. My semester in Bolzano was supposed to start in early March so I thought it would be nice to travel through Venice, I arrived there in a very crowded airplane not knowing that I’m arriving for the first day of the famous Venice Carnival.

Unibz which is the abbreviation for “University of Bolzano-Bozen” is located in the center of the beautiful old city of Bolzano- Bozen, between the lively green and snowy mountains of Italy, Germany and Switzerland.

I found it interesting to learn some Italian and possibly get to know this small town but it hasn’t even been two weeks until Covid found it’s way in and immediately right over night all the shops closed and I never saw these people ever again.

Typography

Hand drawn typography for the title:

Hand drawn typeface versus “Narkis Block” Hebrew font.
More about “Narkis” font which is a classic font that is widely used in the Israeli media and literature publications.

I eventually decided to with Allenby typeface

I also tried adding border lines to the bouding boxes or entire page but then decided it’s best leave it off. I think when the coloring is so heavy it’s good to leave some air between the blocks of images.

It all started when I decided to go to a student exchange in Bolzano

Page 2:

In Bolzano everyone speaks German and Italian

And despite my persistent attempts to learn the language

The Corona virus came and changed all plans

That’s how I found myself at the German border with Marko, Felix and his young brother

After several flights around Europe I was back in Israel

Returning to the quarantine was difficult

And even the cows in my town felt that this situation was completely wrong

That’s how I found myself on the plane to Vienna

The only city without Corona in Europe, which for some reason remained open for Israelis

I found a room in Tim’s apartment

And although everyone here is pretty freaked out most of the time

I enjoy drawing in my room
