A Niche Opportunity for Occupational Therapists
During my time volunteering for Special Aces, I was fortunate enough to work with children of varying ages and abilities by facilitating tennis drills, providing assistance with dynamic movements through verbal and visual cues, and interacting with the children to increase their social skills. I have learned how adaptive technology can be used to increase social and motor skills and sports participation in individuals with disabilities. Additionally, I had the pleasure of working with Special Aces Director Paul Campbell and his wife, Susan, who is an occupational therapist. While volunteering at Special Aces, I was able to gather my own clinical observations, inquire how various performance skills impact children’s sports participation, and identify the relationship between adaptive tennis and adaptive fashion.
