Orthodoxies and Authority

The New York Working Group on Jewish Orthodoxies is an interdisciplinary community of scholars engaged in social scientific research on Orthodox communities (Hasidic, Lithuanian-Yeshivish, Syrian, etc.). The goal of the group is to develop comparative theoretical frameworks and methods for studying Orthodox religious and cultural life (including non-Jewish Orthodoxies), facilitate collaborative research projects (including panels, symposia, and publications), and offer networking and mentorship opportunities between junior and senior scholars.

The theme for our second year, 2017-2018, is “Orthodoxies and Authority.” Please see our About page for more information.

Our meetings and symposia are hosted by Fordham University’s Jewish Studies Program at Lincoln Center, with additional support generously provided by the American Academy for Jewish Research and New York University’s Skirball Department of Hebrew and Judaic Studies.
