LEEYEON – The Artist’s Point of View
“안녕하세요, 이연입니다.”
“Hello, I’m Leeyeon.”
Leeyeon is a Korean artist, as well as a rising
YouTuber. Her main content is to convey her own
thoughts in relation to art with an easy-to-understand
manner. She is known to make videos mainly thinking
about what she would like to tell her past or future self,
and her deep thoughts and insights about life and art
seem to have led to many empathies. She mainly talks
about art, but she specifically aims to talk about “life”
beyond drawing.
Drawing is not the main focus in her video. It
is a story she tells. What she conveys and delivers
through the video is different from any other ordinary
creators. Leeyeon’s videos, such as “How to draw
without fear” or “How to escape from a boring life of
repetition”, allows viewers to have a chance to think
deeply about oneself and ask questions that one would
not be able to think about before.
The world has only taught young and
inexperienced artists how to draw well in a
technical way, and has not shared much of their
experience as a human being before becoming an
artist. However, Lee Yeon is grateful and loved
by many people, sharing her personal thoughts
and experiences for those who are distressed by
various concerns and problems with doing art.
Leeyeon says her YouTube channel’s theme is to
be “comfortable.” And that “comfort” gives
inspiration and relaxation to artists who were
having struggles.
Leeyeon’s artworks are mainly based on
croquis, and usually uses pencils, ink, and
charcoal to draw. Her paintings may seem
simple at first glance, but viewers can feel the
“comfort” that she says again.
Her videos do not have such a grandiose
thing. It is just a story about the small, big
worries that people have.
She says, “It’s a nice Saturday. I decided
to live well with what I have rather than gaining
more. Today I walked with an ugly umbrella. I
felt it was enough.”
