‘Max Dalton, Moments in Film’ – My Art Museum
‘Max Dalton, Moments in Film’ in My Art Museum is illustrator Max Dalton’s first solo exhibition in South Korea. In this exhibition, Dalton expresses his original illustrations based on the moment of the movie. His paintings compressively express the film’s overall narratives on one screen, giving viewers the same fun as finding hidden pictures. The exhibition is divided into five Acts depending on the theme of the work, and visitors can enjoy various works, including
LP covers and fairy tale illustrations, in honor of musical masters such as “The Beatles” and
“Bob Dylan.” The entrance to the exhibition hall begins with a picture of Wes Anderson’s ‘The Grand Budapest Hotel’, which many would be familiar with. This exhibition provides the viewers with his delightful illustrations and gives visitors a pleasant experience of rediscovering the film and sharing their tastes.
The place greets visitors with inscriptions and lighting that could fall into the wilderness of imagination. The exhibition hall was very stylish and neatly designed, creating an aesthetic and emotional atmosphere. The five Acts includes Act 1 Galactical Imagination, Act 2 Moments in Beloved Film, Act 3 The Grand Budapest Hotel and Nostalgia, Act 4 Max’s Artistic World, and Act 5 The Sound of Music. Each Acts has artworks of different movies and music where viewers could enjoy relaxing.
A particular activity this exhibition offers to enjoy is called MvTI(Movie Type Indicator) Test, made from MBTI(Myers–Briggs Type Indicator), a famous psychological personality test. There are 20 different questions written on one wall, and it allows viewers to follow “yes” or “no” to discover their own movie tastes. It is a short and simple test to find a genre that suits you among SF, action, romance, mystery, horror, comedy, and thriller. I felt that this is a fresh approach to the visitors, giving them a fun chance to figure out their movie taste with personality type tests that are friendly to people.
Among all the other works, the painting “Storytellers” stood out to me. The painting “Storytellers” depicts people with their own stories of music. They are all showing themselves enjoying their lives and music that individuals wrote down throughout their life. The people in the picture were painted very simply, but I could feel their moment of enjoyment with their facial expression.
Overall, this exhibition was a refreshing experience to me since I enjoy artworks done from motivation with movies and films. How Max Dalton captured the moments in film is a new way of artistic approach within the topic of art market, by gathering audiences with the popularity of a film.
