Vice dean; Ubell, and online learning director; Vivolo, will jointly give a presentation on “Fighting the Tide: Understanding and Combating Resistance to Online Learning,” exploring strategies for addressing institutional and faculty resistance to online education. Instructional designer; Guy-Ryan, will offer insights into Active Learning Modules in “But How Do We Know They’re Paying Attention?” She will review student engagement in the school’s online Professional Learning joint venture with Scientific American (www.scientificamerican.com/professional-learning/courses/). The Online Learning Consortium is the premier professional society in virtual education, launched at the dawn of online learning, 20 years ago.

Grad Students Rush to Register for Online Courses Taught by All- Star Industry Faculty

A notable strength of NYU Engineering’s online program is its high-profile industry faculty. Variously
known as “industry professors” or “white-hat hackers,” these all-star instructors hail from such top high-tech firms and agencies as Twitter, McAfee and Homeland Security. Included are instructors from Goldman Sachs, General Motors and Jet Blue, among other Fortune 500 companies. They bring in-the-trenches knowledge not often found in academic settings. Some are so sought after that eager graduate students close out their classes within minutes.

Ubell Named to NY State Online Task Force

Vice Dean, Technology-supported Learning at NYU School of Engineering, Robert Ubell (former NYU-Poly’s Enterprise Learning Vice President) has been appointed to New York State’s Board of Regents online learning task force. The new Department of Education unit reviews higher education online program rules, proposing new approval policies more in line with current practice. Ubell also serves on the Board of the Sloan Consortium, the nation’s most prominent digital education professional society.
