Britt Young’s story and the videos of the article tells us about the complexities and challenges faced by individuals with limb differences when it comes to prosthetic technology. 

 

1. Historical Evolution of Prosthetics: Prosthetic technology has a long history, with advancements often driven by military conflicts. Major leaps in prosthetic design occurred after the Civil War and during World War II, as the need for better prosthetic devices grew due to the high number of soldiers with limb amputations.

 

2. Cost and Accessibility: High-tech prosthetic devices can be prohibitively expensive, with prices ranging from $20,000 to $100,000. Even with insurance, it can be challenging to secure coverage for such advanced prosthetics. This cost barrier restricts access for many individuals who may benefit from them.

 

3. Societal Expectations: There can be societal pressure for people with limb differences to opt for high-tech prosthetics to meet others’ expectations. The perception that “bionic” limbs are cool and attention-grabbing can influence individuals’ choices.

Surveillance technology in workplaces.

Surveillance technology, including employee monitoring software and security cameras, was initially introduced in workplaces to enhance security, increase productivity, and ensure employee safety. The idea was to provide employers with tools to monitor and manage operations more effectively.

Over time, the use of surveillance technology in workplaces has raised concerns and resulted in unintended negative consequences for employees:

Privacy issue:  Extensive workplace surveillance can lead to a significant invasion of employees’ privacy. Monitoring their every move, including internet activity, emails, and even restroom breaks, can create a culture of distrust and anxiety.

Stress and Anxiety: Constant surveillance can contribute to heightened stress and anxiety among employees. The fear of being constantly watched or judged can negatively impact their mental well-being, leading to decreased job satisfaction and even burnout. Excessive surveillance can also destroy the trust between employers and employees. When employees feel like they are being treated as suspects rather than trusted team members, it can harm workplace relationships and morale.

Productivity Loss: Paradoxically, the very technology designed to increase productivity can sometimes have the opposite effect. Employees may feel micromanaged and stressed, which can hinder their ability to focus and perform at their best.

 

Dieter Rams’ 10 Principles of Good Design 

 

1. Good design is innovative :The possibilities for innovation are not, by any means, exhausted. Technological development is always offering new opportunities for innovative design. But innovative design always develops in tandem with innovative technology, and can never be an end in itself.

 

2. Good design makes a product useful :A product is bought to be used. It has to satisfy certain criteria, not only functional, but also psychological and aesthetic. Good design emphasizes the usefulness of a product whilst disregarding anything that could possibly detract from it.

 

3. Good design is aesthetic : The aesthetic quality of a product is integral to its usefulness because products we use every day affect our person and our well-being. But only well-executed objects can be beautiful.

 

4. Good design makes a product understandable : It clarifies the product’s structure. Better still, it can make the product talk. At best, it is self-explanatory.

 

5. Good design is unobtrusive : Products fulfilling a purpose are like tools. They are neither decorative objects nor works of art. Their design should therefore be both neutral and restrained, to leave room for the user’s self-expression.

 

6. Good design is honest : It does not make a product more innovative, powerful or valuable than it really is. It does not attempt to manipulate the consumer with promises that cannot be kept.

 

7. Good design is long-lasting : It avoids being fashionable and therefore never appears antiquated. Unlike fashionable design, it lasts many years – even in today’s throwaway society.

 

8. Good design is thorough down to the last detail : Nothing must be arbitrary or left to chance. Care and accuracy in the design process show respect towards the user.

James Dyson

 

Dyson, best known for his vacuum cleaners, fans, and other domestic appliances, clearly embodies many of Rams’ principles. 

 

Innovation : Dyson’s products, like the bagless vacuum and bladeless fan, demonstrate a commitment to innovative design.

 

Usefulness : Dyson designs have a clear emphasis on functionality and performance.

 

Understandability : His products often showcase their inner workings, making the mechanism understandable.

 

Long-lasting and thorough : Dyson products are known for their durability and attention to detail.

 

Environmentally friendly : By emphasizing sustainability and creating products that last longer and perform better, Dyson reduces waste.

  

However, some might argue that certain Dyson designs can be a bit obtrusive or that their aesthetics don’t always align with the minimalist design favored by Rams.

 

Philippe Starck

 

Starck, a multi-disciplinary designer, is known for his unique, avant-garde designs that span from furniture to yachts.

 

Innovation : Starck is undeniably innovative, regularly pushing boundaries in his work.

 

Aesthetic : His work is certainly aesthetic, though in a very different, often provocative way compared to the quiet aesthetics Rams spoke of.

 

Understandability : Some of Starck’s designs can be more abstract and might not immediately reveal their function.

 

Unobtrusive : Starck’s designs can sometimes be the very opposite of “unobtrusive”. They often demand attention and make strong statements.

 

Honesty and environment : While Starck emphasizes eco-friendliness in many projects, the honesty and simplicity that Rams highlighted might not always be present.

 

While both Dyson and Starck exhibit characteristics in line with Rams’ principles, they also diverge in significant ways. Dyson’s work leans more towards functionality and performance, aligning more closely with Rams’ ethos. Starck, on the other hand, often places greater emphasis on making bold aesthetic statements, leading to a different kind of design philosophy.

 

BMW Motorrad,

BMW Motorrad, the motorcycle division of BMW, is a company whose designs often align well with Dieter Rams’ principles of good design.

 

 

1. Good design is innovative : BMW Motorrad has a history of introducing innovative technologies and designs in the motorcycle industry, such as the its unique suspension system.

 

2. Good design makes a product useful : BMW motorcycles are often celebrated for their functionality, whether it’s the long-distance comfort of their touring bikes or the agility of their sport models.

 

3. Good design is aesthetic : BMW motorcycles have a distinctive aesthetic that is both functional and elegant. They aren’t overly flashy but have a timeless quality to them.

 

4. Good design makes a product understandable : The design and layout of most BMW motorcycles make their functions and controls easily understandable to the rider.

 

5. Good design is unobtrusive : BMW’s designs are often understated and purpose-driven. While they have a distinctive look, they aren’t overly aggressive or attention-seeking for the sake of being flashy.

Unnecessary Inventions

 

After the initial feedback for my unnecessary inventions design, I felt I misunderstood the prompt of the challenge. All three of my inventions were not practical (not stupid enough). First, I tried to stick with my original plan of prototyping adjustable weight plates. But as the prototype was getting built, I wanted more innovative but also unnecessary ideas so I changed my product. 

As I was thinking about a new design, I thought it would be hilarious to make a tool for people who cross their legs all the time, like me. It is very annoying every time when one of the legs falls while crossing my legs. The idea was to wear a gear on the shin which goes all the way up to the knee and even longer. Once I adjust the length of the laces to my leg, the gear prevents the other leg (which is on top of the leg holding the ground) from falling off. 

The further plan for my prototype will include the taping around the gear to make it sustain the weight of the leg better, and adding the velcro on each adjustable laces to attach the gear more stable.

There is an abundance of high-quality vacuum cleaners designed solely for traditional vacuuming tasks. However, this tool is an innovative concept of merging wet wiping function with a vacuum cleaner into a single, multifaceted product. This product not only serves dual purposes but is also powered by cutting-edge technology that performs both tasks flawlessly. By harnessing the convenience of this all-in-one tool, individuals who frequently clean can significantly save their time while enjoying the modern and aesthetically pleasing design.

 

 

Air purifier

This air purifier has a sleek and minimalist design, offering users an intuitive idea of its function. Its fanless operation ensures quiet operation, overcoming the noise issues commonly associated with traditional fan-based air purifiers, which also have limited range of air circulation capabilities. Dyson air purifiers go beyond the basics, incorporating multifunctionality, including air cooling and heating systems. With a modern, space-saving design, users can enjoy a comprehensive range of features, from effective air purification to efficient air cooling and heating solutions.

Philippe Starck is a renowned French designer and architect known for his innovative and influential work in the world of design. He has left an indelible mark on the fields of product design, interior design, and architecture.

Starck’s design values are characterized by a commitment to functionality, accessibility, and innovation. He believes in creating products and spaces that are not only aesthetically striking but also highly practical and usable. He emphasizes his preference for democratic design, aiming to make good design accessible to a wide audience, not just a privileged few.

In addition to his emphasis on functionality, Starck places a strong focus on sustainability and environmental responsibility in design. He has also been a proponent of emotional connection in design, aiming to create products and spaces that resonate with users on a personal and emotional level.

HARCOURT MY FIRE, CANDLE HOLDER (BACCARAT)

“The smallest of lights can also be the greatest…”

 

 

I was taken with his concept of transforming a candle into a light stand. While this may initially appear unnecessary, I think this product possesses a unique aesthetic charm. By using a  wine colored glass surface around the candle spot, it presents the atmosphere which a traditional candle alone cannot achieve. This innovation enables the candle enthusiasts to enjoy the scent of a classic candle while simultaneously basking in the modern and gourmet elements it expresses. As he mentioned, “The smallest of lights can also be the greatest…”.

MISS LESS (KARTELL)

 

 

In my personal opinion, this design doesn’t seem particularly well-suited for practical usage. While it might find its place in specific settings like art exhibitions, it tends to impart a rather uncomfortable and rigid impression when considered as a piece of furniture. Furthermore, it also doesn’t appear to align with the principles of democratic design that the artist himself, Philippe Starck, supports.

This is the sketch of one of my unnecessary inventions. I divided my sketch into 5 different parts. The first part of the sketch contains the most basic and intuitive information of the product, which has the extra space beneath the hole in a plate. The extra space of the hole is controlled by an adjustable holder, which is colored in black. The next 4 steps explain how my invention is utilized. 

 

 

 

Step 1

The extra space of the plate is closed and locked by the holder, in order to enable users to exercise with the weights.

Step 2

The extra space is opened by removing the holder to the right.

Step 3

The holder is locked and fixed in the right side of the extra space so that the plate doesn’t move around along the barbell while removing.

Step 4

The final step is to lift up the plate and remove it without any friction from the ground. 

Now, users can easily remove the plate despite the barbell staying on the ground.

 

Smart Design: 

Smart design is about the marriage of form and function, resulting in products that are not only aesthetically pleasing but also highly functional. Products born of smart design are intuitive to use and often feature innovative solutions to everyday problems.  

 

Emotional Design: 

Emotional design takes a different approach. It recognizes that our relationship with products extends beyond their utilitarian purposes. These products are crafted with human emotions in mind, aiming to evoke feelings of joy, nostalgia, and even a sense of belonging. Emotional design can make us feel attached to certain objects, turning them into meaningful parts of our lives.

 

In my opinion, both smart design and emotional design have their unique roles to play in enhancing our lives. Smart design ensures that our interactions with technology are seamless and efficient, making our daily tasks easier and more enjoyable. It optimizes functionality and performance to meet our ever-evolving needs.  On the other hand, emotional design adds depth and richness to our everyday experiences. When we form emotional connections with the objects we use, they become more than just tools; they become companions that enrich our lives and hold sentimental value.

 

One of the products I derive pleasure from and have formed an emotional bond with is my headphones. I think my headphones are exceptionally well-designed, in the context of smart design. They feature an adjustable interface and fold efficiently, enabling them to fit into a container without occupying too much space. The cushions on each side ensure that I can use them without experiencing any ear discomfort. The noise-canceling capability and sound quality are also top-notch, providing users with the highest quality music and tranquility. These qualities have deepened my emotional connection with them, as I turn to these headphones whenever I need music to calm myself or enhance my focus during moments of anxiety. So, my headphones have become more than just audio devices; they have become my companions, offering stability and peace.  

 

Another product is my school bag that I carry with me at all times. Similarly, my school bag is highly convenient for various purposes. It includes a designated space for safely carrying a laptop, making it a versatile choice for my academic needs. Whether I’m on a hiking or a road trip, the bag’s design caters to my requirements, offering a dedicated spot for a water bottle. Crafted from lightweight, breathable, and waterproof materials, it ensures that I can carry it comfortably and keep my essentials well-protected. Over time, this bag has formed an emotional connection with me, since I spent a lot of time alone only with my bag while traveling and moving around the world. It became my companion and a symbol of positive expectations.

I think understanding industrial design involves recognizing the art and science behind creating products that are not only functional but also aesthetically pleasing and user-friendly. Industrial designers play a crucial role in shaping the way we interact with everyday objects, from small smartphones to enormous architectures. Industrial design seeks to find a balance between form and function. It’s about connecting the practical aspects of a product, such as its usability, durability, and efficiency, with the emotional and sensory aspects, like how it looks, feels, and fits into our lives.

Industrial design is about making the world around us more functional, beautiful, and enjoyable. It’s a form of art and industrialization that combines creativity with practicality, and the essence of many of the products we use and love today.

 

1. During my time operating a dozer in the military, I also spent a lot of time on vehicle maintenance. Whenever a vehicle required repair or surveillance tests on parts like the engine oil filter or torque connections, I had to go underneath the vehicle to perform my task. Unfortunately, this restricted my movement, making it necessary for me to rely on my comrades to hand me the required tool components or search through my pocket where various types and sizes of components were mixed together. I thought it would be beneficial to have a small storage space within the gears themselves, similar to the compartment where we insert batteries in a remote controller. For example, we could store several nuts within an appropriately sized spanner.

 

 

2.  I’m a big fan of weight lifting, but I’ve noticed that it can be quite difficult to remove weights from the bar when they are all the same length, regardless of their weight. In order to solve this issue, it would be helpful to have plates with an adjustable opening. This way, users can easily open and close the extra space in the hole as needed. When users are ready to exercise, they can close and lock the extra space to ensure that the bar doesn’t move around. When it’s time to remove the plate, they can simply open the extra space, lift up the plate, and remove it without any friction from the ground. This would greatly improve the ease and convenience of weight lifting workouts.

 

 

3. For frequent users of shaker bottles, the task of cleaning them can be quite bothersome due to the difficulty in reaching the bottom of the bottle. A common issue we face is that even after rinsing the bottle, odors tend to persist. It would be convenient if the shaker bottle is equipped with a zipper mechanism. When it’s time for cleaning, you simply unzip the bottle, and it opens up like a flattened cylinder. This design would make the washing process significantly easier.
