Joy Yang, Connection

Concept:

China has a very long history, meanwhile, shanghai is a modern city, with a lot of modern buildings. Thus, I want to find the traditional elements behind shanghai, I want to show the connection between history and modernity. Modern is the reflection of history.

And the connection between these two pieces is that we can see the reflection of history by watching a modern building.

Process

Part 1:

This is the real picture. I took it in a traditional neighborhood in shanghai, I just want to take photos of some places that have traditional buildings and elements. And the reason I choose this as one of my diptychs is that I decided to choose a photo of a modern building as the background of my other diptych. To make the two photos match and contrast. So decided to choose that one and also I decided to put it upside down, thus it looks like the reflection of the photoshop piece.

Part 2:

I took a lot of pictures that have Chinese traditional elements, and I cut part of it, make it become a rectangle, and then copy and paste it, in the end, make it shape to look like the shadow of the building. And I also upper the transparency to make the pattern looks more like the reflection. And I use eclosion to make the edge of the shape look softer. Also, I put some rectangles outside the building, making it looks like I took away the eternal of the building and the traditional core appear.

The biggest step is to choose which one should I choose as the reality picture and how should i organize the elements. I talk you some of my friend, i have two idea in the beginning, to choose two buildings and build reflection or choose a bridge and use those elements to build a bridge. They suggest me to do the first one, and they also give me suggestions abouthow should i make the elements look more like the shadow of the modern building, i think it is very helpful.

Conclusion:

I fi have more time, i will retake a photo for the photo 1, because the photo i  choose is too dark and loos a lot of details, and i don’t have any other picture that include a whole traditional building, thus i have no choice but to choose this one. SO if i have more time, i may go and take a picture that have a more appropriate light and have more details.
