Memory Soundscape Documentation
- Concept
The memory I choose is my childhood memory back in Beijing. The refreshment of summertime, when I was sitting in the dining hall and sitting beside my grandmother. And meanwhile watching the Olympics, in the evening, my whole family member sat together chatting and watching tv. What I aim to convey are the actual sounds and feelings. For the actual sounds, I add the sound of the television and my family member talking, to bring back what happened in my childhood. And for the feelings, I add sounds like ice, and wind, to create the feeling of summer refreshment.
- Process
I used the sound of ice, the wind, and my grandmother coughing as the first part of my project. And for the second part, I use the Olympics song and my singing. And then I use the sound of the television, my family chatting, and audio from when I was 4 years old to make the third part of the project. I didn’t use any complex recording techniques, I just find a quiet place, start to make sound and record, and put the recorder as close as I can to the origins of the sound. The problem I encountered is I want to record the sound of my grandma’s rocking chair, but after I record it, the sound of the rocking chair is very small. I tried to make it louder, but after I change it to louder, the sound begin to sound rough and don’t like the rocking chair.
2. I don’t know how to fade in and fade out, so I search online and find a teaching video to teach me how to do this. And then I know how to fade in and fade out. And for my singing part, I want to add more elements to make it sounds abundant, but when I add other sounds, I find it become very chaotic and doesn’t match my voice, so I choose to just use my voice.
- Conclusion
How would you improve your project if you had more time?
On presentation day: Did you receive feedback that informs further steps you would like to take? Explain how your work was perceived by others, and reflect on their feedback.
If I have more time, I will delete the Olympic March part or cut the Olympic March into pieces and remake it, I think putting the whole Olympics sounds very awkward. And I received feedback that the sound of the rocking chair can’t be recognized, so if I get more time, I will work more on the rocking chair sound, to record a more recognizable sound or use better techniques to edit it. And I think I can edit the middle part, the march part and the final part of my singing and my childhood voice, to make the whole project sound more
