#Blog 12: Visual Metaphor Proposal

I. Project Title: Catch-20

III.  Concept | Storyline:

1). What is the piece (article, poem, story) for the narrative voice over?

I am going to use the quotes in the book Catch-22, a popular doggerel during the Culture revolution and an original doggerel.

“There was only one catch and that was Catch-22, which specified that a concern for one’s safety in the face of dangers that were real and immediate was the process of a rational mind. Orr was crazy and could be grounded. All he had to do was ask; and as soon as he did, he would no longer be crazy and would have to fly more missions. Orr would be crazy to fly more missions and sane if he didn’t, but if he was sane he had to fly them. If he flew them he was crazy and didn’t have to; but if he didn’t want to he was sane and had to. Yossarian was moved very deeply by the absolute simplicity of this clause of Catch-22 and let out a respectful whistle.

“That’s some catch, that Catch-22,” he observed.

“It’s the best there is,” Doc Daneeka agreed.”
― Joseph Heller, Catch-22

要文斗不要武斗,武斗违反了十六条,打人骂人犯错误,今后一定要改正…

要核酸不要乱窜,串联违反了二十条,大白加码犯错误,今天一定要改正…

2). What’s the story about?  3). Which part of the story are you going to focus on?

The story is about a paradoxical situation from which an individual cannot escape because of contradictory rules or limitations. This can apply to the situation we are in right now. And it’s just fun to compare the 16 regulations during the Culture Revolution and the 20 regulations we have right now to “optimize control of Covid”with a text that describes the absurdity in America.

3). What kind of style/aesthetics are you going to pursue?

I cannot really decide yet. But I am thinking of creating contrast to show the absurdity and using flashbacks of archival documents.

IV. Execution Plan:

1). What equipment are you going to use when shooting the movie? (cell phone, DSLR camera, sound recorder, stabilizer..)

DSLR camera, sound recorder, stabilizer, archive videos

2). Which locations will it be shot at? When is it? Day time/night/unknown? Why?

It will be shot somewhere similar to or near the original Wulumuqi Road, and also in a studio setting for still shots. For the outdoor shots, it will be shot both at day and at night to give a sense of loop and unsolvability.

3). What are some challenges you might encounter and how will you prepare?

Challenges would be to find the exact corresponding visual elements to fit the script. I will try to break down the script into different layers and then think about the individual elements that can represent that moment. Also, to shot both day and night is a time-consuming work, but I think if I want to reach the final effect, what I can do is to use the time.
