Final Research

I would like to define interaction as each action that leads to a response that, in turn, encourages or enables another action. And here are some elements of Interactive Media Art unlike traditional media, interactive media is meant to enhance a user’s experience. In order to do so, an interactive medium will require one more of the following elements:

  • Moving images and graphics
  • Animation
  • Digital Text
  • Video
  • Audio

Also, in the article written by Ernest Edmonds, interactions are from simple to complex. There are 4 kinds of actions: static, dynamic-passive, dynamic-interactive, and dynamic-interactive(varying). This is also related to my own definition mentioned in the mid-term project. And here are my findings which are really interactive and interesting.

Here is the video of the first project.

It’s a dancing machine. People on it will make the appropriate action according to the instructions of the machine, such as walking at a pace with the rhythm of the music, waving arms, turning in circles, etc. At the same time, the different color blocks on the display correspond to the different actions that people need to make. There will be sensors on the machine to capture people’s movements and give a score according to accuracy. The score will be high when the rhythm is consistent with the rhythm of the machine. Players will constantly react and interact with the machine. When they see their score or whether they miss it, they will try harder. It is well-related to Ernest Edmonds’s definition of dynamic-interactive action: the human ‘viewer’ has an active role in influencing the changes in the art object.  And, this interactivity does not end when the machine gives only one action but has coherent movements. This is a very interesting interactive game, I can learn from the music in the auditory, visual effects, and human movement combined to complete the human-computer interaction. I hope I can combine visual and auditory in my next project.

And here is the second project.

This focuses more on images, colors, and artistry. The creator uses light and shadow and many small props to complete the painting. These small props may not be attractive in themselves, but when they are combined with the art of light and shadow, they appear to be amazing. I think these works are very creative and artistic. It is also very interactive, people first find the right small props through handicrafts, etc., then draw on paper, and then combine the three-dimensional props with flat drawings. The two are combined to form a work of art. When the light and shade change, or when the intensity of the wind changes, the form of the work changes as well. This work inspired me how to make my project more artistic and creative, I can choose different types of props and combine different senses, such as images, sounds, etc. to make it more interactive. Though it may not include continuous actions, it can let me think about more of my final project’s outlook.

Those projects really inspired me, and I hope I can use their ideas to finish my final project. They also fit well with my definition of interaction at the beginning, which is to meet the interaction between people and objects,  and objects and objects.
