In this assignment, we were asked to edit an audio clip based on a memory, splicing different audio tracks together to create an immersive scene.

My original idea came from a film which I watched recently, “The Truman Show”. It is a thought-provoking film that challenges the boundaries of reality and explores the themes of free will and personal identity. The movie left me deep impression. It has become part of my valuable memory. In the ending part of the movie, Truman found that there were always a dark cloud above him, and everything seemed to be set up. Then he realized this is a “fake world” specially created for him. This moment can be regarded as a moment that Truman opened the door between two-dimensional world and three-dimensional world, so I emphasized the sound of the door in my project.

Besides, to add to the atmosphere, I also added the sound of people running and the sound of rain. After doing a basic background audio, I found it too monotonous. I thought about it for a long time, tried a lot of different approaches, and finally decided to add the sound of the 3D world studio at the beginning of the audio, and use the obvious sound as a cue to indicate the beginning of the film (which means the transfer of perspective of the 3D world to the 2D world), and echo the studio sound at the end. In addition, the sound of keyboard runs throughout the audio. I turned down the sound of this track, which represents both the editing sound and the feeling of echo.

In the process of sound recording, I try to choose the sound recording of life. I ran down an empty corridor with a recording device and recorded the sound of running. I found a heavier door and finished recording the sound of it opening and closing. One of the things that bothered me during the recording process was that the sound of water running from the tap was a little too false, but I couldn’t find anything else that could be used as a background sound for rain. Fortunately, it was a rainy day before the presentation, so I went outside and successfully recorded the sound of rain. The sound of running water is used by me to represent clouds and showers.

For sounds that I can’t record in my life, I do it by adding special effects. Through special effects, I changed the sound of plastic bags rubbing together into the sound of thunder, the sound of books falling into the sound of houses collapsing, and the sound of separating chopsticks into the sound of branches breaking. By using special effects, I increase the richness of my audio. At the same time, I am more proficient in Adobe Audition.

In the end, I got good results with the audio, but at the same time, I also got some useful advice. First of all, the overall sound of my audio is a little low, and it would be better if it were played a little bit louder. In addition, due to the superposition of the audio track, the sound of some parts is fuzzy, and there is no way to accurately judge the situation, which may cause some confusion to some extent. If I had more time, I think I would have polished each track more carefully and paid attention to the integrity of the audio to make the whole audio more natural and immersive.

All in all, it’s a really meaningful assignment for me. I received a lot of knowledge and joy from it.
