After finishing the study in interaction lab last semester, I chose communications lab to continue my ima journey. Different from interaction lab, communications lab pays more attention to the “communication” between people, people and objects, and the world through various media.
Our first big project this semester is called “sound visualization”. We were asked to choose a song we liked. Then, according to the melody of the song and the meaning of the lyrics, we need to use 26 letters to create an image in Adobe Illustrator, to achieve the sound “visualization”.
When I first read the assignment, I was very confused. Because in my impression, sound should be more associated with hearing than sight. Using only two colors, black and white, and the alphabet greatly adds to the difficulty. With doubts about whether it could be completed successfully, I tried to start my work.
In terms of song choice, I did not hesitate to choose twice’s new song “I got you”. I like this song very much both in melody and lyrics. After listening to it a few times with my eyes closed and headphones on, I had a rough picture in my head. The main melody of the song is coherent, with few pauses and little time for the singer to breathe (very challenging to sing!). Therefore, the song will give the feeling of continuous coming from a far away place. So I want to create a pattern that runs from the top right corner to the bottom left corner, from far to near. In addition, the lyrics of the song are mainly about “no matter how far apart we are, we will meet one day”. I believe that music has the power to break down barriers. The unique power of music can bring people together and feel the same vibration frequency. I want my work to convey that as well.
Then it went into production. First I tried to stretch the letter “V” to fill the space, but I gave up because both the paper was too large and it was difficult to find an appropriate angle. Then I turned to the patchwork of different letters to create the effect I wanted, and successfully produced the main part of my project.
