Projection Mapping: Class 12

Final Project Proposal

Seasons in Bloom

Group: TQ Vuu & Stephanie Yip

Concept:

Our concept is to display the change of seasons in an immersive and interactive way using 3D and 2D elements such as a life-size tree and origami/fake flowers to bring the scene to life. This way the audience can experience the growth and transition between the 4 seasons and be able to control what they see using sensors.

Relationship between content and object:

Using a life-size tree and flowers, we plan on projecting graphics and colors onto the objects such as the flowers to show it blooming and coming to life or wilting depending on each season. We also plan on utilizing our space by adding moss/leaves on the ground to make grass, snow and sand depending on what season it is and displaying the leaves falling in the background. With the sensors, we are thinking of using a touch sensor on the flowers so when you touch it, it will activate the flower to bloom. Depending on what we can get and figure out, we are also thinking of having an object that is connected to either a temperature or a touch sensor so when the audience touches it, the tree and scene will activate and it will change the seasons depending on how long you hold it for.

Blueprint (top and side view of a diagram):

Materials:

  • Moss for the floor (for the ground pile)
  • Cardboard (tree)
  • Fake leaves/flowers (for the tree)
  • Curtain
  • Arduino and Sensors
  •

Objects:

  • Tree and Flower
  • Curtain (background)
  • Small plant on a stand (for temperature sensor)

Content:

  • Projection on Wall and Ground
    • Winter: Snow falling shown on wall, accumulating snow pile on ground
    • Autumn: Leaves falling, piles of leaves
    • Summer: Tropical beach, palm tree, crashing waves
    • Spring: Grassy flower field, floor is grass

Interactivity:

  • Touch sensor (placed under/inside the objects)
    • Tree: flowers on tree will bloom, change colors, wither, cause leaves to fall
  • Temperature sensor
    • Seasons will change based on the user’s hand temperature
    • User will hold onto a leaf from the plant on the stand, and based on that temperature, the season will change
  • Distance sensor
    • Everything activates once individual is within a certain distance of it; otherwise the projection is inactivated

Presentation by Juliette Bibasse

Last week, independent curator and digital art producer, Juliette Bibasse, visited our class and presented her works, collaborations, and future visions. I especially liked the water works with her partner Joanie Lemercier, as they projected visuals onto a water screen, and worked on making the water screen installations in their studio. I haven’t thought of projected art on water, so it was interesting to see how it was executed. I also liked how she encouraged every artist that she worked with to adapt to the environment they were working, whether it was an outdoor or indoor installation. She had visions as a producer and curator on how to expand their work, even if they did not work with physical materials, larger spaces, or digital art and light. She also discussed a lot on focusing on the audience, and how to utilize various spaces to welcome larger audiences and publicize the art. I also appreciated how she discussed the limits of installations due to budgeting, and how working around it takes much creative thinking. She helped her artists work with making the art and site combine and connect well, making everything cohesive and an interesting experience. The second half of her presentation focused on Solar Lab, which is a collaboration between her and Joanie, on making art and installations using solar energy. The focus is to reduce the energy consumption used in technology, and to rather rely on sustainable forms of energy like the sun. I thought this was quite interesting and unique that she went from producing vast installations that use lots of energy to carefully considering the environment and how the use of technology affects it. Her and Joanie’s story of documenting the deforestation in Europe along with the protests and their activism expressed through forms of art was inspirational. As society advances in technology, more people must think about the consequences and how it deeply affects our environment.

Finding of the Week

I was in New Jersey for Thanksgiving and there were multiple houses that already set up their Christmas decorations outside. This specific house had a projected visual of Winter and Christmas elements on the garage, which I thought was cute. The projector sits on a chair on the side. The visual content is played on a loop. They also had many lights up along with inflatable lawn decorations.
