Innovation Lab: On Newson
Marc Newson is an innovative designer known for his futuristic and sleek designs; his works cover the various fields of furniture, household products, fashion, and even more. His work is often a combination of organic and fluid forms with high-tech materials and manufacturing processes. Most of his designs are characterized by their attention to detail, as he mentions the importance of understanding the material being worked with, and the tedious process it takes to create a product. Newson’s ability to seamlessly blend form and function to create products that are both aesthetically pleasing and highly functional is inspirational. He creates things not just to have them, but because the result includes obtaining new knowledge on how these items are made, making it an educational experience.
I couldn’t decide between which piece of design work was my favorite, but my top 3 would be the Bumper Bed V2, Tripod Book Stand, and the Cloisonné Black Blossom Lounge. I really like the Bumper Bed V2 because it reimagines the bed frame into another useful aspect which you could use to sit on, place items, etc. It also seems much more comfortable than a regular bed frame because if you were to move around in your sleep, you wouldn’t accidentally hurt yourself (like the wooden frames). I like version 2 more than the original because of the added headrest. I think the Tripod Book Stand is great as a statement piece whether it be in a home, office, or store. It is visually appealing to look at, and can be especially useful if you are looking at a book while doing other things. I think the Cloisonné Black Blossom Lounge is an incredible piece of design work because it is handmade and the enameling technique used to craft it. It looks as if a vase were turned into a lounge chair, and looking closely you can see the precision, time, and effort put into designing and crafting this piece, which I think is overall very cool.
My least favorite piece from Newson was the Glass Newson Vase, which I thought was quite basic and boring in comparison to his other works. The three small holes on top and the height of the vase may also not adequately fit all types of flowers. It was visually bland to look at and there was nothing that especially stood out to me.
Compare and Contrast
Marc Newson, James Dyson, and Philippe Starck are all well known innovative designers with their respective distinct styles. Newson’s design philosophy revolves around minimalist and futuristic aesthetics, and they frequently incorporate advanced materials and manufacturing techniques to create sleek and fluid looking products. In contrast, Dyson is known for his practical yet stylish approach to household appliances, emphasizing engineering solutions to everyday problems. His vacuum cleaner designs and hair care products (hair dryer, airwrap) are infamous. On the other hand, Philippe Starck, embraces a more whimsical design style, where he often blends traditional elements with avant-garde components. For their similarities, Newson and Dyson share a focus on pushing the boundaries of design and technology, as they often incorporate the two for efficient use and outlook of the future. Starck’s work is much more playful, and perhaps a little repetitive in some designs. Despite these differences, all three designers each contribute a unique perspective and style to innovative design.
