Group Project

  • First, write about the idea your group focused on that fulfills the assigned criteria. Explain precisely how what your group invented derives from, responds to or relates, in some significant manner, to the established form of interaction you identified in your research of the two projects in the RESEARCH phase of the project. Provide idea sketches for your design and explain your decisions. Give your opinion on the successes and the failures of the artifact. Please clarify exactly what contributions and roles you personally made to the process and project along the way, and describe the process your group used to work together.

Our group’s idea is a robot that can dance according to people’s emotions. You turn on the projector and you can see the holographic robot. The hand is authentic so you can hold hands with the robot, then it will know your emotion no matter you are happy or sad by reading your action and expression. After that, it will choose a suitable dance and dance with you to make you get out of sadness, calm down, or be much happier.

Our group invented derives from the fiction The Fish of Lijiang written by Chen Qiufan. Everything in Lijiang is virtual even the fish. And you will be trapped in the wonderful scenes, can’t believe everything is fake. So our group translate this plot into “the interactive art project can produce an impact on people’s emotion. And in the REAEARCH phase of the project, I define interaction as a process: listen, consider and respond. I think our group interactive project highly meet the establish form of interaction I identified. Because the robot can “listen” to different people’s emotion and consider choosing a suitable dance with you. I think it is the process of “listen, consider and respond”. In detail, people motivate the robot to respond. The response will be received by people leading to some new inspiration.

Our sketch is a robot that can dance. But we think it is not that interactive, because it can’t give different feedback to different people. So we adjust our design to the final one

.

The successes of theartifacts I think is the props we made are all simple and strong. Those can help our project to present well without explanation. And the prop gift is very delicate, after presentation we sent it to a birthday girl!  On the other hand, our artifacts also have some failure.  We had a plot that the robot should dance with people. But the robot’s helmet was too large to jump. So finally we decided to use this helmet only when the robot is at standstill. And when the projector is opened, the robot takes off the helmet and becomes a “real person”.  I made the helmet by myself and help to think of some idea about the robot like the robot can not just dance but based on the emotion.

After deciding the dance robot, we rolled the dice to allocate I am the robot.  And we also designed our description: There are a sad person and a happy person. They opened the robot and dance in different types. We need a gift to send to a person to make him happy,a drum to beat the rhythm, a helmet for the robot, and a projector.

Then we divided into two groups to go to the workshop to make our props. Vivian and Crystal made the projector. Robbin made a gift and a drum to dub the music( he can play drum very well!). And I made a helmet for the robot.  We scheduled every Wednesday to rehearse. We make the sad person plot to dance ballroom dance. And the happy person plot to jump and turn around. Also we designed the robot guide the sad person’s hand into its shoulder. When the sad person crouches on the ground and crying, the robot pats him on the shoulder, pulls him up and hugs him.

  • Next, provide a critical analysis and assessment of a performance from another group. Start with the description of the project. How relevant/not relevant is the interactive artifact to the fictional story? How well/not well does it meet the criteria of the assignment? What is your opinion of the design of the device? How creatively does the performance help you understand the artifact? Do you have any suggestions for improvements?

The performance from another group impressed me most is a machine, which can change people’s emotion. The description of the project: People puts their emotion bubble into the machine and then the machine will put the bubble to other people. For example, if someone is happy, he can put his happy bubble into the machine. And the machine will give the bubble to other people to make them be happy. The interactive artifact is relevant to the fiction Winter Market. A man can take a girl’s dreams and uses them to make movie. So this group design a machine that can take people’s emotion.

I think they meet the criteria of the assignment well. They didn’t explain the interactive artifact but we can still know what it is from their lively performance. Every props are made by themselves. And this idea was came from the plot. I think the design is good, and the group can rise the track because sometimes the ball will run out of track. The performance is good, they show four types of emotion to make us better understand the function of the machine. And they drew expression on sides of the box and turned the box to show different expression. I think this can help us to get to know more about the artifact.

The suggestion for the project is that, personally, they can tell more about how to make this bubble to people’s head. Because based on today’s technology, people can’t wear a hat with their emotion bubble in it. They can further more introduce some about it.
