For this piece, I was inspired by the unconditionally in editing of Wu Tsang, as well as her “mockumentary” style, as in her piece “Into a Space of Love”. Furthermore, I remembered the datamoshing effect from early New Media artworks that explored pop culture.
For this piece specifically, I was mostly inspired by artwork that local artists have done in my hometown of San Diego. I wanted to create a “mockumentary”-like atmosphere, but focus on the subject matter of unsettling-human emotions. To make this, I interviewed a few of my university contemporaries about what they find to be particularly upsetting in their lives, as well as what they find to make their lives worthwhile. I then took the most obscure or unsettling parts of their interviews and put them together into a distorted mosh of editing to the beat of a song I created myself.
