THE VELDT
For this story, I want to design an artifact that is similar to what they call “nursery” in the story. However, my idea will be physically conducted and it will give the participant respective experiences through this. It is also set up as a room constructed with technological glasses. The room will be a semicircle platform with a wall that can reflect the “shadow” of the person who is in the room. Lights will be set up around the room, so as different kinds of sensors. You can either sit or stand in the room during the procession because as long as you stepped into the room, the robotics will start computing your emotions, gesture, tone, and attitude. After you settle, you will be asked to place your hand on the wall indicated. It is when the participant will see their shadow on the wall and accordingly feels themselves physically. The critical thing is that the shadow will be different depending on the person’s sentiment. The room setup will also alter accordingly. It will let the participant experience their own sentiment physically and will respond differently respective on the energy the person emanates. Ultimately, the room acted as a duplication of one’s self. I was inspired by a similar technology which is called thermography, which senses temperature by infrared light. My idea does the same thing but with the extension of responding to the person who emits those energies. Problems that can be caused by this are the person could be impacted or harmed by the mechanism due to an unknown response (because it is based on a person’s sentiment).

The Ones Who Walks Away from the Omelas

I want to create an interactive artifact that displays the hard work of the little kid who lives in a tiny sealed room. The artifact will be designed as a gallery hall composed of different stations and content. The display content depends on which block the people step on and as the blocks are closer to the door of the kid’s room, the content displayed will be more desperate(the kid’s experience). Each block is then marked with a different level of happiness the people in the town experience. I wanted to convey the concept of what is behind the splendor and happiness of the people; it is the sacrifice of someone else. I hope this will remind and alert people not to indulge in happiness and ignore who produced that happiness for them. Moreover, this artifact can be initiated at every house and corner of Omelas. There’s a design that is similar to my idea, where that design displays how nightfall and the activities happen during nighttime. The problem that can be caused by this artifact is that the people will be more disgusted or annoyed by this instead of feeling pathetic and sympathetic.
THE PLAGUE
An interactive artifact that I wanted to create for this story is a case that is like a capsule of an invincible shield, nobody can harm you through that. It can be attached and adorned on your garment or whatever things it is solid. It can be in auto-mode where it will automatically pop out if it senses danger near you within 5 meters. Or, it can be manual and activated by double tapping. This is a type of invention that I really want to let come true for many years because I think it is really useful, safe, and secure. A similar design that comes up to my mind is the toy weapon that is scaleable. The only problem that this invention can cause is that it might block the way of the initiator.
