Check out our final performance! ⬇️
When our group was first in touch with this project, we first thought about which article would be the easiest to elaborate on and come up with an artifact. After our first meeting, we decided to choose the second article, The Winter Market, to enter Lise’s world and build an artifact that helps people suffering from the same illnesses as she does. After discussion, we decided to make a helmet or mask that assists others in viewing themself. Through that artifact, the users could rebuild or improve problems they have right now.
My idea for this project:
During our first meeting, we agreed that we would use broken pieces of mirrors to help users interact and choose the parts they want to rebuild by replacing the broken pieces together.
During sketching, I was influenced by LIVALL’s motorcycle helmet and imagined that it might be a good idea for our project if AR/VR techniques were inserted into it.
In my own writing of the second article, The Winter Market. I referenced an installation called Eyeballz found on MANA. Their essential idea is a technique called visual tracking, which I found it could be useful for our project as an example of “replacement”.https://www.manamana.net/video/detail?id=1649065#!zh
Our team initially wanted to build this artifact to help people that are disabled, which is why we call it “disability assistant”. People losing specific senses or ability to live like others could fulfil their want of pretreatment by using our artifact. During the building process, I engaged in the process of planning (coming up with a central idea of the work), planning materials we needed for this project, coming up with performance details, and manufacturing our artifact. I personally think we are successful in our idea, it’s very cyberpunk, and it is clear that our work was elaborated from the second article. We failed in the performance process a bit, I would say, and also on the creation process. If we could take more time on making it and have access to thicker materials, the display could be much better.
Here are some process images:
I was fascinated by group 3’s performance. Their project also came from The Winter Market, but totally different focus than our group. They made a dream machine that users could alter their dreams by using the machines, so they will always dream something they want to dream about. I think it is relevant to the story, which could help Lise dream something of her preference. I was attracted more to their performance, it’s clear, and showed the machine’s pros and cons. I also believe if they had more time and more approaches to various materials, the display would be more complete. Nevertheless, that was my favourite group out of 4 of the others.
