As a designer, Marc Newson values the ways of using material, the process, formulation of idea, and the techniques in designing products while pushing the boundaries. Color is also an important component of his design from the way they interact with each other or how they show through the materials. It is interesting for me on how traveling too, plays a role in the process of his inspiration. In term of having timeless designs, he aims to create something that would be able in a sense to live its own life, and he mentioned that designers should be preoccupied to create a design that can remain “classic” throughout a long time or withstand the time. Similar to Starck, Newson designs wide variety of products such as furnitures and kitchen tools/containers. A lot of his design involves patterns of shapes and colors(most are bright colors or white) that cover a wide surface of the product.
Design I like
Bumper bed is one of Newson’s designs that I like the most. The concept of this product is to replace the mattress with a ‘beautiful bed’. Besides, I think this design is also for people who enjoy sleeping on the mattress/floor instead of a bed on a bed frame. Since I was a kid I enjoy sleeping on the mattress placed directly on the floor because I am scare of “the monsters under the bed” I imagined. So, I think I will want to have something like the bumper bed; it feels comfy for me.
Least Favorite
Zvezdochka Sneaker is my least favorite design, simply because of its appearance. There are too many dots on the sneaker that trick my eyes.
Comparing the designers
Among the three designers, I resonate with Dyson the most as majority of his designs are practical and innovative, focusing on specific types of product with simple classy design with minimal color. Following, Starck’s ideas and products are creative and playful, and he designed a wide range of products from interiors to smaller household objects in various styles. Lastly, Newson’s designs focus on materials and colors, where a portion of them are covered with repetitive patterns with shapes or objects(circles/dots/flowers).
