Week 4: Philippe Starck

Philippe Starck design a wide variety of things from hotels to furnitures and small objects like watch and glasses. Like what he said in the interview, he tries to push the limit of his job since design cannot save lives and that it is obsolete, design can only make life better. I find his concepts and core values in design interesting; besides the importance of the effect of the project(product) on society, Starch mentioned that it is crucial to understand what are our real needs and not the needs created by marketing and advertising. I agree on his idea in helping the society in evolution and finding the actual needs. Nowadays, people often get conveyed by the tricky advertisements and buy products or tools that are useless and unworthy. Such kind of problems and waste can be avoided if both customers and industrial designers know exactly what people in the society need, focusing on ways that can make life easier.

A design that I dislike is Alessi Presents Juicy Salif XXL. Though the shape and form of the juice squeezer is creative and the idea innovative, I wouldn’t notice that it is a juice squeezer if I pass by in a market. Moreover, it may take up unnecessary space if placed in a kitchen. It looks more like an art sculpture than a juice squeezer.

My favorite design of Philippe Starck is  My World (Cassina). I like the idea of having a mini table sticking at the side of the sofa and leaving a gap for people to turn side and place their legs. At home, I enjoy working on a comfortable sofa than on a set of wooden table and chair; so I think this product will be perfect for people like me.
