Week 2: Smart and Emotional Design

The core of smart design are understanding people and what their needs are, to design, the designers do not only focus on the average users, they look at the extremes, which includes the weakest, the strongest or the fastest people. When the designers pay attentions to the extremes, undoubtedly the ones at the average will  also be capable to use the product. Smart design involves addressing user needs and solving problems. It often incorporates technology and innovation to enhance the overall utility and performance of the product, while providing a seamless and user-friendly experience. In the video, the designers work together to create a grip for a peeler and a hedge shear. They focus on different designs that will allow the users to hold the grip more conveniently with less pressure. These types of designs and product enhance individual lifestyles by simplifying daily tasks and rendering tools more user-friendly and convenient.

While smart design focuses on functionality, efficiency, and problem-solving, emotional design emphasizes creating products that connect with users on a deeper emotional level, enhancing the overall user experience. It aims to elicit positive feelings, satisfaction, and a sense of connection through the smooth design and functionality of the product. In practice, I believe that successful designs often combine elements of both smart and emotional design to create well-rounded and appealing products.

One example of the emotional product that I have is a spiral hair tie that I have been using for almost a year. Unlike other hair ties that squeeze tight on your wrist when you wear them, the spiral hair tie I have stays there lose just like a bracelet. Moreover, the spiral hair tie does not leave an obvious mark of line on my hair after I untie it, and it’s thickness allows me to reuse it for a long time. As I wear it on my wrist everyday, I find myself emotionally attached to it. Another example is my bag from North Face. While it is physically appealing, the size is just alright for me to fit in my lunch box, water bottle, notebook, file, and my laptop. Moreover, there are several small pockets and sections to keep things organized. The shape and its puffer texture make me feel like I am hugging a pillow whenever I place it on my lap during a roadtrip.
