Dieter Rams’ Principles of Design Discussion – Week 5

With Dieter Rams’ 10 Principles of Good Design, good design includes being innovative, long-lasting, purposeful, aesthetic, etc.

Looking at the work of designers over the last two weeks such as Phillips Starck and James Dyson, many of their products fit the 10 Principles of Good Design. Dyson products are functional, especially in their line of vacuum cleaners, as they work normally but have bladeless fans, making their filters easy to clean. Additionally, Dyson products are easy to use; the UI of them are designed simply and clearly. In comparison, Starck’s products focus less own functionality or usefulness. Instead, his products focus on aesthetics and innovation. His designs, in comparison to Dyson’s are unconventional and more contemporary.

A product that fits Dieter Rams’ 10 Principles of Good Design is the Canon 6D. Its product is useful for beginner and advanced photographers, aesthetic, easy to understand, long-lasting, honest, and simple. It is not unobtrusive due to its size and nature.
