The interesting part of this film is obviously the 5 obstructions. Cuba, Bombay, Brussels, Cartoon, and the fifth obstruction all have huge elements that are shown beautifully in the film the cooler part is all of the rules that are added to make the film more interesting.
Cuba- There are only 12 frames in each edit, it is set in Cuba which is good as well as the questions that are asked in the film are answered in the narration
Bombay – A miserable place that should not be shown and Jorgen Leth is the man
Brussels – There is a choice that is made. Leth goes back to Bombay or make a freestyle film
Cartoon – A remaking of this film as an animated film
5th Obstruction – Trier is to make himself the last obstruction but Leth is credited as the director
These obstructions not only allow Leth to explore other areas of artistic fields. It allows him to experiment with other experimental factors that create a different feeling from his original “The Perfect Human”
Another interesting thing that this film creates is the struggle with something new. Leth is presented with a challenge when he has to make the 4th obstruction. The cartoon was something that he hated but he had to cope with it to finish the film. Viewers can see that even though he hated the idea of creating a cartoon version of the film the result of it was still a creative masterpiece. It shows both Leth’s genius as well as the human drive to adapt and overcome challenges.
