My Personal Thinking of the 3 Readings
From these 3 readings, I have learned a new terminology called conditional design. From my previous understanding of art design, I think art is more like something that does not fit into reality and logic. Art design should be something that requires imaginative thoughts and creative productivity. I believed only artists without constraints and conditions could create remarkable artwork.
However, after reading these 3 readings, they have changed some of my opinions about art design, especially in the 21st century.
In their creation process, constraints, and conditions seem to be mandatory. Their creation process is more like inevitable conduct under certain circumstances. Their artwork is a combination of logic, precision, and beauty.
In traditional art processing, the process of producing requires a lot of imagination and creativity. Personally, I like drawing, singing, and making videos. Some of them are traditional art forms, and some of them are new media. All of the creation requires imagination, modification, and alternatives during processing. However, in the 3 readings, the process is similar to the computer repeating a fixed program automatically. They developed a set of rules in the first place, and then they only have to repeat the fixed rules to create artwork.
My Imagination of a Set of Rules
- A group of four people, with 3-5 different color highlighters on the table.
- One person should start drawing a line on the white paper, and it could be anywhere and any length, and we will call it the main line.
- The next person needs to draw another line (the vice line) with the same color in any direction, starting at the end (both ends are fine) of the existing line(main line). But the vice line should be shorter than the main line.
- The next person could either choose to use the same color of the main line to repeat step 3 or can pick another color to start a new main line anywhere at the blank.
- The group could stop whenever they think the image starts to get messy.
When I was considering my rules, I was thinking about the image of a tree. I was thinking of the image of a leaf, and then it reminds me of the image of the neural web of human beings. So wanted to devise something like a web that originates from a single point. However, the instruction may get too complex if it starts from a point, so I made a line version.
I was thinking about how can I make it more colorful and more interesting than just a single color. And how can I make it clear that I wanted to make a web? So I tried to describe the image like a web in my mind, and I made it an instruction. I am not sure how it would look as people’s opinions of “messy” could be different, but I am pretty sure it would end up like a web.
