Proposal One
A. Furry Robotic Companion
B. Project statement of purpose
The idea is about building, or in other words, “raising” a robotic puppy. There are multiple sensors (pressure, distance, light, etc) inside the puppy, connected to Arduino. When these sensors are activated, signals and values will be sent to Processing, which is responsible for exhibiting corresponding actions and motions made by the puppy on the screen.
I’ve seen several similar projects, but most of them are intended for the elderly, serving a therapeutic purpose. However, I think a robotic pet can be applied more broadly. Thus, I turn my view towards a very familiar group: students and faculty members at NYU Shanghai. Whether they’re exhausted after a long day of work, or just simply missing their pets at home in their own country, the furry robotic puppy is always there for them as an emotion reliever.

Proposal Two
A. Kingdom of Sound
B. Project statement of purpose
If there exists a world mirroring and visualizing the sound in our daily life, what will it be like? In order to realize this, several soundtracks should be recorded in advance (for example, traffic jams in the rush hours, people chatting in a coffee shop, speakers downstairs calling loud for PCR tests, etc…). Each button, connected to Arduino, stands for one type of sound. After the user presses the button, signals will be sent to Processing, which starts to portray and visualize the sound. Different patterns will emerge on the screen based on the pitch, volume and frequency of the sound, forming a unique picture. Thus, various scenes in our real life can be reflected in this “kingdom”.
Speaking of the topic of this project, my initial intended audience was people with hearing disabilities. The project is able to visualize and demonstrate the world of sound to them in an artistic, beautiful way. But when I thought about it later, I reckoned that everyone who lives in the hustle and bustle of city life should slow down the pace and pay more attention to the sounds in daily life which may not be paid attention to before.

Proposal Three
A. Everyone is Picasso
B. Project statement of purpose
The idea is basically about using a real-time camera or simply a picture in Processing to randomly rearrange people’s facial structures to create an abstract painting. The extent of abstraction depends on how users switch the potentiometers, which are connected to Arduino.
