“The Uncertainty of Documentarism” Discussion Questions
What is the significance of the authenticity and representation of the truth in the media that you consume on a daily basis? What is the role of a live broadcast?
The original purpose of any aspect of documentary content, including news broadcasts or documentary films is to authentically represent the truth. Unlike fictional films or shows that create a setting inside the four walls
of the frame, a nonfictional piece aims to capture the whole image looking at the story from different perspectives. The role of a live broadcast, specifically, is to inform their viewers through an objective unbiased portrayal of the world.
Steyerl talks about how the “unbroken belief” of the documentary form is challenged. What does Steyerl mean by this? Certain movies and films are based on a true story. How does truth inform the fiction? How might fiction inform the truth?
By suggesting this, Steyerl suggests that audiences no longer have full belief that even documentary films portray the whole truth because of the rise of propaganda and the spread of biased information. The mixture of truth and fiction can be portrayed through films based on true stories. It is significant to remember that regardless of the form of films, their primary purpose is to entertain. Therefore, these films don’t appropriately portray reality.
