Concept

Vertumnus. by Giuseppe Arcimboldo, 1591

This concept of the collage is originated from a well-known painting  named Vertumus. The arrangements of the plants to imitate a human is very impressive, so I learned from it and used food and other daily objects to imitate a scene in the city. I also want to demonstrate the city life from a micro, personal perspective by using those small objects.

Process

Photo

The photo I choosed was taken near the campus, I used slow shutter speed to create a sense of movement. In the photo, the surrounding is dark because it is taken at night, so it forms a clear contrast between the car lights and the dark trees and roads.

Collage

In the collage, I replace the buildings with cans and bottles in the kitchen, replace poles with pencils, replace trees with celeries and broccolis, replace the lights with candy stripes. I used many kinds of filters to make it look more dynamic, mainly neutral filter and blur filters. I also used perspective transform to make the elements more vivid.

I wanted to involve more elements at first, but I found it would be very difficult to keep them all harmonious. Also, in the first edition, there weren’t any glowing objects, so it would be hard for the audience to find a focus in the collage, so I used Gaussian blur filter to create a glowing effect for the forks, and especially, the milk carton. For me, I think it is the most significance modification.

Conclusion

If I had more time, I would like to recolor this collage. To be frank, I didn’t have a draft before I made it, so I could imagine how those elements were arranged, but I didn’t pay enough attention to the colors, so some parts of the collage are a bit messy and some details are not clear because the colors are too similar.
