The sounds of nature can be calming and restorative. In The Sound of a Wild Snail Eating, Elisabeth Tova Bailey finds comfort and companionship through an illness by listening to her snail as it eats. The goal of this program is for NYU Shanghai community members to take inspiration from our Reads book and create a collection of nature sounds from Shanghai.
NYU Shanghai students, faculty, and staff are welcome to participate in this multi-stage program.
We will begin on Saturday April 22 with a day trip to Gongqing Forest Park. Participants will form groups and collaborate to record sounds from nature, taking inspiration from The Sound of a Wild Snail Eating.
On a later date, a member of each group will produce a final sound clip in an editing workshop.
Finally, during the week of May 1, we’ll gather for an Audio Showcase on a date convenient for all our participants. Groups will present their final sound files to each other and to the NYU Shanghai community. Food will be provided.
The files will remain available on a/this dedicated website for anyone who needs a moment of peace and restoration.
