Lumia could be simply described as art created by light. In the film LUMIA, a madam mentions that Lumia was created to show the spiritual world of artists. When we close our eyes, we can imagine some things like patterns or colors. Lumia could present these imaginations. Thomas Wilfred is called the father of video art. He was definitely a pioneer of art at that time. As Orgeman wrote in his article, “Wilfred was devising a mechanical technique akin to painting with the rays of an electric lightbulb” at a time when artists were still using traditional tools and machines were not connected with art (23). Wilfred invented the machine named Clavilux. It’s an amazing mechanical invention that gives the audience a brand new experience of art performance because it creates beautiful patterns with lights.
Besides offering the amazing experience of fine art for the audience, his works were also guiding scientists to discover space. Wilfred connected his lighting machine with astronomy and created artworks according to the star trails. His works have not only shown the revolution in fine art as technology developed but also guided some people on their ways to research study in different areas, for example, astronomers. From my point of view, Wilfred is not only an artist but also a scientist, engineer, etc. He is a talented person who’s using his understanding of light, art, and science to influence the world.
