While listening to the audio, I found the frequency of voice changes slowly, as described in the reading, the human voice is erased gradually and environmental music covers the room. It’s amazing and confusing how human voice becomes faint and distant and is finally dominated by naturally occurring acoustic sound. I realized that this sound might originate from the architectural structure and some noise that we can’t usually hear. The resonance of this background noise, architectural sound, and human voice becomes a unique melody. At first, I thought it was only the change of the frequency and I considered that changed version as noise, however, when the environmental music becomes clearer and takes the place of the human voice completely, I realized that it is actually more like music. The tone of the music is changing and the melody is like the performance of an orchestra.
The temporality of this artwork is interesting. The music and sound are different from physical artwork, for instance, paintings. However, environmental music has its artistic value because in some sense it is an amazing mixture of human effort and natural music. It’s difficult for the museum to collect this work and some might see it meaningless. But based on how I understand art, I think the combination of the human voice and the environmental sound which we don’t usually notice and hear in our daily life, and have their uniqueness, should be considered as artworks. Artworks could be appreciated by eyes and also ears. Enjoying beautiful music as well as paintings both brings me pleasure.
