Zhiyan Wan- Photo Diptych
- Concept
What I want to convey through these two pictures is the mental disease such as depression and insomnia that people in such a modern society commonly suffer. I think a main cause for these problems is too much pressure on work. We need to take more time out of work and outside the building. We need time to relax and enjoy peaceful moments to get refreshed. That’s why I put a photo of sunset as the background of the second picture. Sunset is always beautiful. It represents the beautiful and peaceful moments that we easily miss in our daily life. But because of hard work and our busy lifestyle, we don’t have time or just don’t want to spend time going out of office building and enjoying a sunset. The first picture shows someone’s hand on the window of a building. Maybe the person wants to get out and have a walk but he cannot since it is supposed to be his working time. The second picture is rather a third person’s view. We can see an eye with desire to go out and also a hand which is trying to push aside the thorns. The throns resemble the large workload.
- Process
For my part I image, I went out and took some photos of the sunset near a museum in Shanghai. I found that there were a number of people appreciating the sunset there and they look relaxed, peaceful and calm. This impressed me and that’s when I try to think of building connections with people working inside and beautiful landscapes outside. I tried to shoot in different angles and variable lights then. By adjusting iso and focus, I took ideal images. I figured out the importance of these tools in practice.
In part II I used masking to organise my photos to well display the relationships between the pictures. I also changed the hue into pureple to show the gloomy mood. At first I didn’t know how to use the different effects of Photoshop, which took me a long time to deal with. After attending some workshops and asking help from my peers, I became known of some important effects and tried to apply them to my composition.
- Conclusion
If I had more time, I’ll probably check the light of my two pictures in the printing process. I found the pictures appeared darker than those on computer when I printed them out. Besides, I would make the eye in the middle of the second image bigger to attract more focus. My second picture seems to be confusing with some unclear elements. If I could change, I would make my composition easier for the audience to understand by enhancing the lighting, making the eye bigger and other elements appear clearer.
