Concept & Story

Inspiration:

This short film was inspired by the trailer of the movie Your Name. We were inspired by the aesthetics the movie had and the way that they did the narration for the trailer. Thus, our film may give off the same feel as that of many other anime trailers such as Your Name.

Concept + Story:

For this project, our concept was the idea of how two people, who’s paths seemingly never cross, was able to find each other and eventually start something with each other.

Playing with that concept, we chose to have the setting to be in school and have the two characters cross path on one fateful day as one is rushing towards somewhere and another slowly walking around.

In our story, our female is social but feels that she isn’t in the same world as her friends and thus have a lonely inside mental world. Our male character is what you would normally see in shows as a stereotypical loner who does everything by himself and doesn’t really have his life together. Regardless of the difference between them, one single similarity is able to bring both of them together and the ending of our film suggests that they become close and start something special.

Creation Process & Execution

Storyboard:

Our original storyboard was used as way to plan out and lay out how we wanted to go about filming our project. However, in the actual process of filming we did actually stick to everything that we drew on the storyboard, such as the bus scene. This was due to us believing that while the bus scene was a great way to show the two characters did have crossing paths in their life, it would bother too many people within the process. Thus we took the creative liberty and just leave it as the male lead coming to school completely by himself and alone while the female lead still does walk with her friends. However most of the scenes for the female side was relatively left untouched.

As one can tell after watching the film, we completely disposed the concept of the juxtapositions in same scene to show the contrast between the two main characters. This was mostly because we figured that having the two separated would’ve shown more than having the two shown together. As for the final with the paper falling being removed, it’s due to our accidental mistake and didn’t press record when on set.

Filming, Editing and Post-Production Process:

I was only part of pre-production, such as the acting, storyboard, script, and the additional voiceover sections, thus I did not participate for actual editing and other post-production process. For that section of the project please visit my partner’s documentation blog post instead.

Aesthetics & Results

Aesthetics

Overall aesthetics were made to be similar to that of Your Name trailer. As for stylistic choice as to how some shots where shoot, head over to my partner, Yancy’s documentation instead.

Results

We had to results in the end, a version without voice over and one with voice over. Although there were some footage lost throughout shooting, the overall result does exactly what we wished for it to convey.
