Project Assignment: Step 1

Interaction

What is interaction? After following some of the readings especially Crawford, I was able to formulate some of my own conclusions on what I think interaction means. Interaction is two parties or people thinking, speaking and listening to each other. The effectiveness of the interaction depends on how well these three components all work together. This means that you can have good and bad interaction.

Below I analyzed 2 projects, one is an example of interaction and the other is not.

In this link It shows an example of what Interaction is not. The video is of a changing image projected onto a house, an art piece in the parks of Suzhou. The reason I say This is not interaction is because there are two parties, the house and us- the viewer-. For there too be interaction both parties have to be speaking, thinking and listening to each other. In this project there is only thinking and speaking, none of which are mutual so the interaction is ineffective.

The project above shows an example of interaction. It is a project done by VOLNA, an interactive light project installed on the park. The reason it is interactive is because the art requires both parties, the art and the person to interact with each other. This is an example where speaking, listening and thinking is happening between both parties and they are reacting to each other. The interaction is effective.
