Memory Soundscape

A. Concept

I chose to portray the night when I sneaked into the kitchen to secretly take a sip of wine for the first time as a kid. I lit a candle that broke the silence and kicked off the whole memory. And then I moved on tiptoe to the kitchen with the key wobbling, using the key to unlock the drawer where the red wine was put. I also made a water-flushing sound as a trick to pretend I was going to the bathroom. Finally, I took a sip. The soundscape of ocean wave sounds indicates the strange wonderful feeling after the wine was swallowed into my stomach.

B. Process

I mainly used gadgets that are commen on tables to create subtle, cute sounds. Such as keys, bottles, match, pill bottles, a snap hair clip, etc. I chose them because in the memory it was at midnight and I was doing something secretly (like stealing some wine), which was sneaky and quiet.

Choosing sound materials was easy, while editing them, as well as organizing the sequence and layers, was hard. (1) To avoid sudden blank spaces between sentences, I make sure the ambient sound is there all the time until the whole work ends. (2)  There are some repetitions in the work, so in order not to bore my audience, the loudness of the same sounds is different. For example, I repeat a sound twice, but the second time it appears, it gets quieter.

C. Conclusion
How would you improve your project if you had more time?
On presentation day: Did you receive feedback that informs further steps you would like to take? Explain how your work was perceived by others, and reflect on their feedback.

The work still sounds not so stereoscopic enough. I suppose it is because the layers don’t contribute organically, they are still somewhat existing in an independent way.
