The reading for the week discussed various ways of storytelling. First, it introduced Aristotle’s Narrative Model which had a definitive beginning, middle, and end. This narrative method is simplistic, but there are also other narrative methods such as experimental dramas that may loop or African Oral Literature which is based on the oral presentation of the narrative where the narrative voice creates audience interactions. These are two examples provided by the readings.
One example of storytelling that I was previously exposed to was the Choose Your Own Adventure book series in which the reader becomes the protagonist that decides the path they want to take. For example, it would provide options when the protagonist reaches a crucial point of the story where they would turn to certain pages to continue and see what happens. This sort of narration and storytelling is entirely based upon the choices of the readers (although the following story components have already been decided). Through this method of storytelling, the outcome of the story is at times indefinite and sometimes the story ends up in a loop where the reader may have to sway away from the choices to reach the conclusion of the story. In this sense, they would have to cheat to reach their outcome which is a type of ignoring the script for storytelling.
