For Week 8 of Toy Design, the task was to design our own character. I designed a jester-like character where the descriptions will be attached in illustrated poster. For my character the name is Unknown and the Last name is a space to indicate that there’s no last name or family for this individual. I started out with a graphite drawing, thinking about how the character should look like before moving into illustrator to complete the other part of the task which includes the turnarounds, description, collection, and questions. As I’m bad at sketching due to little practice, I didn’t draw graphite turnarounds, but rather focused on illustrative turnarounds. I think that overall, my character is sophisticated in color and division of parts which makes it difficult to draw as well as imagine the turnaround. Because of that, I planned on buying air dry clay to create the prototype of this character so that I can illustrate it well, but there are delivery delays which prohibit this from occurring. Below is the story.
Unknown was abandoned early on in childhood by parents and tied to a stop sign for people to hopefully adopt them, however, days passed and no one wanted Unknown. Having been neglected by their family, and now by society, Unknown becomes emotionless, losing any hope in humanity that they previously had. All they do is wander around, smiling… but do they really want to smile? What does it mean to smile? Unknown doesn’t know, but it is all they can do in life. They go on.. smiling, smiling, and smiling… when will they cease to smile?
Here is the photo of the first draft of the graphite sketch.
Here is a photo of the scene from the story, illustrating the disownment of Unknown at the stop sign in the country of Pellegrino. For the kinetic element, I plan on using Cam 2 to move the hands of Unknown to show the crying motion so that the introduction scene can be portrayed. Later, I will use the gear A to make him continue walking everywhere smiling. At the end, I will use Cam 2 again to show him crying and ceasing to smile.
Here is the Illustrator Version of the design, showing the collection, turnaround, and information of character. The multicolored “Unknown” represents the collector’s edition that’s limited in quantity which gives ode to Popmart’s Special edition of it’s collector toys. The other colors are normal editions.
