It’s going to be about a relationship that involves violence. And the victim can’t get away from it even though he/she gets the chance due to several reasons.

 

       3). Which part of the story are you going to focus on? 

We are going to analyze the reasons why domestic violence(violent abuse) happened when the victims can not go away. What’s worse, sometimes they leave but they are coming back.

       4). What kind of style/aesthetics are you going to pursue?

Non-narrative, but we are going to present the emotions within the story through different representations.

The memory I chose was about a time when I had insomnia that was so severe that I had to take melatonin medication to fall asleep. Due to the medication, I actually had a short interval between when I was ready to go to sleep and when I went to sleep, and the dreams would become very strange. At first, it was psychedelic and calm, then it became agitated in the middle, then it became bizarre, filled with whispered murmurs, and finally, the drug stopped working, making it somewhat indistinguishable from dream and reality…
During the recording process, I visualize a bedtime preparation to sleep process through a series of sounds made by bedtime preparation actions (light switch, footsteps, quilt rubbing, pill bottle rattling, drinking water and taking medicine, and calm breathing). Then I suggest the beginning of the dream by ringing the bell, by overlapping the different sound materials to create the first dream sounds, including the subway through the tunnel, background music, bells, etc… Then, through the loop of water sound effects, showing the dream world switch, then there is the roar of motorcycles, camera shutter sound to switch film and music to interweave a more psychedelic crazy atmosphere, and then transition to the eerie piano sound and nails scratching wood intense sound effects and people whispering to form a spooky and scary atmosphere. Finally, the sound of the radio and the wind chimes convey a comfortable everyday atmosphere, making people think the dream is over, but then a bell rings to realize that the dream has just not ended, forming the first echo effect.
The difficulty I had in editing the audio was that when I used a certain effect, I needed to adjust each tiny converter many times because the effect of these converters was so abstract. I found it difficult to control every little variable in the process.
During the presentation, I received feedback such as “the transition into the dream state is not clear enough” and “the volume of the sound of the medication is too low”. So I made a lot of adjustments in this area, including re-recording the sound of drinking and adding the sound of sleep breathing to express the process of entering the dream state.
If I had time to polish my project, I would like to make the transitions in the different dream states a little smoother and tenser.

I believe that in the media, authenticity is one of the most basic principles. Although the media and traffic often will make the public feel what they want, the media, as one of the primary sources of information in the era of big data, is responsible for ensuring the authenticity and representativeness of the information.

The significance of live broadcasts is in getting the information delivered fast enough so that the credibility of the information can be maximized. Live broadcasts are an important tool in the dissemination of information as they can ensure that information is delivered quickly and accurately. This allows the credibility of the information to be maximized as it is being delivered in real time, allowing viewers to make informed decisions. Live broadcasts also provide a valuable platform for audience engagement, giving viewers the opportunity to interact with the broadcaster and ask questions in order to gain more insight into the topics being discussed. Live broadcasts are therefore a powerful tool for providing the most up-to-date information and allowing for an open dialogue between the broadcaster and the audience.

 

Have you experienced insomnia?

If you did, how was it? What are you thinking? Are you feeling much more sensitive? Moodier?

I have experienced insomnia and I was really surprised by how moody and up&down I felt. I will look in the morrow feeling I am the prettiest in the world while the next second I start to wonder if I have a smaller face or bigger eyes. I will feel so good about being alone while next second I wish I am with someone at this moment.

The night is a time for the senses to be amplified, so you can always hear contemporary young people saying “emo” at night, and it’s such a wonderful time to feel your emotions more truly as if you can really hear your inner voice.
So I think the night sound is extremely artistic, and with the right arrangement and effects, it would be a piece that I personally would love.

Project name: MAN IN PAINTING(画中人）

The concept of my diptych is showing 2 characters in comparison. I want to demonstrate a strong contrast using lighting(brightness) and color. In the first photo, I let the colorful character be the one painting the black&white character, which shows the intention of a “color” human painting a digital “non-color” human. In the other photo, I take the photo from the painting characters’ perspective to illustrate the intention from a “black&white” perspective, everything is black&white. The conversation between these 2 photos is obvious and I think the concept is really up to the perspectives of the audience. I also want to show some connections between the digital world and the real world by associating communication.

About the detailed process, in editing the first photo I mainly changed the saturation of the whole photo to make the color contrast of the picture more obvious, while in the processing of details, I want to emphasize more on the contrast between black and white and color, so I adjusted the black and white contrast of the black and white portrait by way of local adjustment to make it more obvious. At the same time, in order to reflect the colorful characters in the “painting” of black and white characters, I turned up the local brightness of the brush to highlight. For the second photo, I first turned the whole tone to black and white and added a pixel value effect to make the whole image look like a sketch, to highlight the shift in perspective. At the same time, I added a date icon at the bottom, so that it looks like this picture is numbered by the virtual world. I also made a lot of improvements on the second one. At first, I just changed the second one to a black-and-white sketch and didn’t think about the color communication anymore, but when I talked to my professor and got a peer review, I noticed that the second one did lack some interaction with the first one. So I started thinking about how to add color blocks to the second photo. So I first used a brush with similar clarity to the whole photo to fill in the hands of the portrait figure. Then I came up with a clip art approach, where I cut and paste color blocks from the material to achieve a more harmonious balance

The biggest problem I encountered was that the color saturation I needed for the first image was too high, resulting in the black-and-white portrait in the picture not being visible enough, but rather bluish. So it was really hard to adjust the process, but eventually, I was able to change it to black and white to the maximum extent by making local adjustments step by step.
I think if I had time to improve my project, I would spend more time thinking about the color elements of the second black and white sketch and how it could better echo the first photo.

Final version

The fluidity indicates the fact of the innovation of new media and digital technology can vary from a very big range. The fluidity highlights the fact that we can make one image combine with another with no conflicts so that nobody can recognize it without technical help. Compared with, traditional paintings only reflect on the object itself while the new form of media can be changed/beautified. As Ritchin mentioned in the article that: “this new medium may turn out to be as distinct from its predecessor as photography was from painting, or even as the automobile was from the horse-drawn carriage.” It is obvious that when cars first being invented, people could never think of them as we do nowadays.  Cars can then evolute to be subways and high-speed trains. But back then people only called it horse-drawn without a horse. Similarly, the fluidity of the digital can not be evaluated without understanding the power of the new medium.  

I think photography can reflect reality to a certain extent, but objectively speaking, the degree of realism of photography can change arbitrarily from 0-100, because it is possible that none of the works are real and all rely on the post and photoshop transformation, or they can be completely real, such as when you hold up your phone and take a real scene. But from a photographic point of view, it is impossible to measure. But in comparison, I think we can sort the authenticity of media as follows. text<book<VR<photography<video. because text and books are actually similar in connotation, they are things that can be constructed directly by people putting pen or typing, compared to VR in that it is more realistic because of the use of visualization technology, and most VR works are created based on reality. The difference between photography and video, on the other hand, is that video is the result of combining multiple photos, which means that to some extent there is more detail than the photo itself, thus reflecting a process.

The concept of my design is “falling”. The song I chose, “I’m the one”, is a very typical lyrical blues-style melodic rap by Korean melodic rapper BLOO. From verse to hook, the whole melody becomes progressively more aggressive, until the chorus gives the listener a compound emotion of landing and rising through the synthesizer. My work uses two letters, I and O. My work creates a black and white grid by taking the letter I, which is the abstract meaning of man and using “effect” to make this plane more three-dimensional and 3D, to achieve a three-dimensional arc of space, creating the feeling of falling. I think one black square assignment is the best way to create the feeling of falling. I think the one black square assignment provided me with the inspiration to create a sense of 3D through Gestalt’s principle of closure. I did not take into account the importance of the size and distance of the object to the sense of space, so the final three-dimensional effect presented by the assignment is not obvious. Therefore, in the spatial processing of sound visualization, I considered the final effect from both grid size and distance, so that the audience can clearly feel that this is a three-dimensional work when they see this work.

In the process of completing the work, the changes from the first draft to the final draft were actually very big.

Initially, my idea was to reflect the 3D effect by distorting it, but I tried almost all effects before I finally decided to use the fisheye effect, because it was the closest to the effect of the top being wide and the bottom being narrow, and then by connecting the letter I into the bottom line to achieve a combination of point and line. mid critique before I wanted to achieve a falling theme by scattering the round pieces in a big and small way next to the main image. theme. However, after mid-critique, I changed the randomly scattered circles to circles and circles in order of size to make the whole picture more harmonious and interesting, and ornamental. Also, I added scattered circles inside the main figure to make this figure more connected and complementary to the circles around the edges.
I think if I had time to change this work again, I would use another three-dimensional circle across the main image so that it would be a spatial composition with two perspectives, which would make the whole work more layered. 

 

The overall concept of my photo diptych is the contrast between colors and black&white. I want to express my idea thorough the strong contrast in the photo.
For the communication of the two photos, I wanted to show the contrast from different perspectives, mainly through the shift of angles. My idea is that I will take a colorful person holding a brush to paint a black and white portrait, and another angle I will look at the colorful person painting from the perspective of the person in the portrait (ps to black and white), so that there will be a strong interaction effect in the photo.
I will show the colored person in a way similar to a black and white sketch, which means that what kind of person will exist in what kind of perspective

 

In the 21st century, with the rapid development of technology, social media has been deeply bound to every person. On social media, people share their photos, their lives, their thoughts and feelings, and so on. Social media can be said to be another form of human expression of self-identity. However, everyone wants to be more beautiful and perfect, and this common goal has given birth to the “filter”. The birth of “filters”. A so-called filter is a tool that can directly make the picture in the camera more exquisite and beautiful when humans take pictures and is a kind of technology that modern humans are very much in pursuit of and love.

The feeling that social media brings to human beings is like the feeling that a filter gives to human beings. On social media, you will see many different people sharing a wonderful and sophisticated life. You will see your favorite bloggers sharing their lives, excellent grades, rich practical activities, fashionable clothes, fulfilling studies, and so on. While gaining satisfaction, you will also unconsciously start to compare your own life. Because people spend the most time with themselves, at all times you are observing yourself, so it is absolutely true, then you will feel inferior – why my life is not like this. Similarly, when you take a picture with a filter, you look so good and perfect in the camera, but when you remove the filter, you start to feel sad because of the contrast.

Life under the heavy filter constitutes social media.

Social media is a new form of filter.

 

Think about introducing a traditional custom to a person from another culture speaking a different language. That would be hard, not only because of not speaking a common language but also because of the whole different cultural background and experience. What about introducing it to an alien who has a different language and thinking system? 

In Story of Your Life, the alien whose body structure doesn’t have a front and back possesses a language that is completely different from human’s. Their writing and speaking languages are separate and without a linear concept. Perhaps in their culture, there is no consequence or result. Imagine how we can introduce human technology to them.

When we discussed how we are going to demonstrate what a filter is on social media and how it works, we struggled a lot with how to explain the process of “before and after” of the function of this human technology. Because of the language as well as the worldview of the aliens, they don’t consist in a linear sense. They may not know to read from right to left, or from up to down. And of course, using arrows would not make sense even though it’s one of the most effective ways to express information in human language. So instead, we gave up the idea of explaining the relationship between consequence and result and focused on what it would be like to perform such technology. 

We tried to explain the filter inside of a phone screen in this way:

In the image we created, we put two faces. One represents the real self, and the one with the filter is framed inside a box. The latter is a “better” and “upgraded” version of the former. It has cute cat ears, eyes with long lashes, a taller nose, and red lipstick. In this sense, we hope to let the alien understand that this technology we introduce is something that can make one’s face in another space different. And there are some circles at the bottom of the box, which is a cell phone, that represent options for different filters. The biggest circle in the middle shows that it is the one being used. And when it’s selected, the filter that shows on the face (or “things” that appear on the face) will correspond to the graphics in the circle.
