- the veldt: the walls can connect to the Internet, so the walls can also simulate people elsewhere. The machine is designed partially for psychological research. It is important to study social communications in the realm of psychology. And I think researchers should develop this function. The pattern left will definitely look different if they can experience the fantasy and make friends with people from other places. The fiction already shows the danger of addiction to the lively digital world. I’m afraid with the function installed, children would be more addicted to the walls.
- The Ones Who Walk Away From Omelas: The novel creates a utopia where there is only joy and peace. However, there is a child who suffers everything in exchange. People who accept the situation remain in the city, and the others walk away. I critique the idea of joy city, so I want to design a joy measurement equipment that can show wearers’ joy level simultaneously to people around. citizens of Omelas can compare their joy level with others. I wonder about pedestrians’ reactions if they see others’ joy less or more than themselves, will the joy city still exist? Moreover, what about the child of sin? Would he or she feel extremely unequal when others’ numbers are much higher, or will citizens more shame of themselves?
- The Plague: the fiction describes a contagious virus that will make people move unobservable slowly. Thus, human society becomes equal, except for a specific group of people living in an absolutely infection-free area. The specific group regards infected people as a new form of life, conceals the fact that infected people are alive, and cheats common folks. I want to create a machine, or a medicine probably, which can temporarily slow down normal people’s consciousness to the petrified people’s. The virus provides a macro perspective on reality for the people. The world will run at an extremely high speed in their eyes. They can be true storytellers and humanity can consult them the history. The problem the technology may cause is that the uninfected people might regard the infected people as tools. They can move, place, and damage the infected people of their own will. Maybe there will be laws to protect the infected.
