Black Square Assignment

I. Sight, Sword, Self

Through this work, I want to express the connection between external perception and self-perception. The diagonal composition is a combination of a puppet and a sword, to express that too much dependence and attention to external perceptions may lead to self-lost and manipulated like a puppet. The portrait in the vertical direction represents an introspective person who is less exposed to external influences. The fragments at the bottom of the picture represent the accumulation of outside views and opinions.

II. Me and Me

I want to tell the multi-faceted nature of human beings through this work. The idea actually came from the emotional touch that my friend gave me, and then I thought that everyone actually has different “sides” that show up in different environments and social circles. I used the contrast of geometric lines and curves to show this opposition, but these two parts together form a whole heart, thus showing that they are actually unified.

III. Surveillance

I wanted to show the pervasive gaze in this work, so I simply used a variety of different shapes of eyes to complete the composition.

IV. Net

Through this work I want to express my understanding of different human relationships. The three more figurative figures in the silhouette show the people who are most important to us and who we care about each other, which could be family, lover, friend, etc. All the other line segments serve as abstract depictions of relationships between anyone. These lines intersect, miss, break or end abruptly, all representing different relationships in different stages of life. The spiral shape of the web between these lines symbolizes the infinite extension of the web without an end.
