1.Steyerl talks about how the “unbroken belief” of the documentary form is challenged. How are Steyerl’s ideas about truth and fiction represented and expressed in Abbas Kiarostami’s film? How does truth inform the fiction in Close up? How might fiction inform the truth?
As Steyerl argues in her perspectives, the unbroken belief means the truth of documentaries are challenged for the reason that images and shots have no longer conveyed the reality intends to convey the truth. The images still has the unpredictable factors and uncertainties, sometimes the representation is not accurate or real in the things of images. Those uncertainties are challenging the truth of documentaries, even the meaning behind these images has been destroyed. The truth may provide information for fiction in Steyerl’s article, because there is a truth behind the colored spots in CNN broadcasts, so we can see these spots and understand the context, or understand some abstract things because of the real context.
2. What is the significance of the authenticity and representation of the truth in the media that you consume on a daily basis? What is the role of a live broadcast?
The importance of authenticity and authenticity in daily media may have an impact on politics, public opinion, social life and other things, because these resources are available to ordinary audiences. In popular media, images, news, or current events are either considered to be true or not trusted, considering the existence of editing tools such as Photoshop, and the audience does not always understand the full context of things. This makes the mass media sensational, but also difficult to trust. The function of live broadcast is to show what actually happened at a specific time. I would think that the live broadcast is closer to the truth because it is recorded in real time, which means that the video has not been edited and censored. However, if we cannot distinguish the actual image, such as the CNN broadcast described by Steyerl, this may challenge the authenticity of the broadcast and change the content we rely on to make the broadcast more realistic.
