Photo Diptych

My name: Yicong Liu Audrey

Name of Project: Childhood

Concept:
When I think about my childhood, I usually come up with the soda and lego which are the main compositions of my childhood. They are the attracting and beautiful memories in my golden old time. But all these things including the soda, the entertainment park, the bubbles, the lego and dolls, they all are gone just along the time flies. So I want to use the soda and legos to represent my feelings and miss for my precious childhood , and also the thinking of the time flash away  in my dizzy dream.

Process:
(1) Describe  process in staging and photographing part I.

The first step I have taken lots of photos and tried to show the colorful and attracting features of the legos and soda. What’s more , I also intended to make the color of soda can and legos matched or so-called paired with each other, which I want to make the color of the photo more harmony .

The figures are stable and still in the picture just want to emphasize the lego and soda themselves to tell the meaning of my childhood.

(2) Describe  digital process in creating part II image.

I was so confused about the composition of my diptych because it is hard to tell the atmosphere of dream and memories. The memories usually are faded and not that clear, so the color should be not that bright. And also the composition is also need to create something new to show the theme of childhood. So I tried to use the can to make a little track which we can usually see in the entertainment park, and made the background brown which just like the color of our dreams.

Conclusion:
I will make more connection between two pictures ,just let the two can’t be presented without each other. To make the two can tell out what is the definition of my childhood even clearly and apparently.

Reflection of “In Our Own Image”

  1. What does Ritchin mean with the “fluidity of the digital”? Give an example of digital imaging/digital photography that exemplifies this.

The fluidity of the digital refers to the changes and developments in photography which might came from the advancement and progress of editing technology. In recent years, photo editing software becomes much more accessible and easier to use, people who not only including  professional photographers, can manipulate photos by changing the structure of the image. It can be easily converted to other media, such as video and virtual reality.

Nowadays, any private photos can be made public immediately, and can even be used or manipulated for malicious purposes. Once a friend of mine prosecuted a soap operas’ company for which it use my friend’s parents’ marrying photo in the plot without her permission. That also an aspect of the fluidity of the digital. However, if we can use it correctly, the digital platform also provides us with new narrative possibilities.

2.Reflect on the extent to which photography is capable of capturing reality; and compare it to other media (technology) (e.g. text, video, virtual reality, books).

With the advancement of technology, we can use photography to start taking images of objects in real life. For example, scientists use electrodes to take pictures of monkeys’ brains. This is a feeling of capturing reality. In essence, they capture part of time through the monkey’s brain and how the brain functions through photos. If we compare this technique with text, video or books, the photography of monkey brains is much more complicated than what the books describe. In this sense, photography can capture reality better than other forms of media. In recent years, computer technology and photos have been developed to the extent that they can replace traditional brushes and canvases. We can capture an image and save it immediately without having to physically draw it out of some inaccuracy. Today, photography itself has become a language, but the vocabulary is limited. Photos may be able to capture reality effectively, but viewers can interpret these photos differently and use them in different ways, which may eventually cause problems, which other forms of media (such as text and video) will not encounter Situation to actual usage of words and sounds. Photography is a new language, but it is not as flawed as any other form of media.

Sound Visualization Record

Yicong Liu Audrey,Chopin: Waltz No.19 in A minor, Op.Posth, Chopin

Waltz No.19 in A minor, Op.Posth, Chopin

Concept and Design:

When I first accidentally open the Music app, it recommend me this beautiful and elegant waltz for “guess what I like”, and the beautiful melody let me think up a dynamic picture, because it’s a song for the waltz ,which people can dance to. So the element of the piano and dancers, fantastic dress and crystal high heels suddenly crushed into my mind. Then I seemed like know what I would like to add into this black square.

My design use the similarity, continuity and proximity of the Gestalt theory, because the pattern I want to create is the piano and two dancers ,a male and a female who are holding each other and drawn into this beautiful and smooth melody, the word of “waltz” has been deformated and distorted and showing like the trial of the couple which had left on the dance floor. They whirled across the dance floor and the waltz company with their movements. The English words I used is “I” which can be seen as the couple and also the pianist, the trail on the ground is the “waltz”being distorted.

Process:

First, it was so hard to create a 3 dimension picture for I intended to make the piano also looks like a stare access to the dance floor,so I tried and failed for many times to make it looks like a spiral stare which is painted in black and white. However, the angle between each stairs and the width of each black and while rectangle were so hard to adjust to the best formation and composition in my minds. And I also asked the fellow for more suggestions, he recommended me that I should make the piano stares much longer and extend it to the left side of the whole paper, which can make the patterns stretch even longer and more extended. The composition of the people and the piano stares also have been a block to me in the designing process. The position I should put into, and how these patterns should be organized also worried me a lot, when I thought about they can reflect and call on with each other, then I finally know how this whole designing being organized.

Conclusion:

Because I didn’t save the ai version of my design, so I didn’t make the piano extended. If I can make a progress, I would extend the stares and make some variation of the circles.
