Our group built a television; when people use this device, they can put on the earphone and imagine what they want. Then the television will give the thing, and people can directly grab it from the screen. And the TV has three bottoms, which can provide different categories of items. Our idea is derived from “The Veldt”. This story shows the room children can get into, and their parents try to get in to save them. So we first think about how they can get into the virtual world. And want to make a device with two users, and the TV screen can be rendered in real-time TV. Both users can also react in the virtual world. For the interactive device, we intended to make helmets and gloves. But it takes a lot of work to use cardboard to achieve them. We think about other head-mounted devices like glasses and are finally determined to use earphones. Earphones can not only get information from the brain but also accept the voice said by the users so that it can achieve the transport process.
For the research part, my idea for the story is about big screen and VR glasses. So we make a TV screen is connected with this.
With our further discussions, we have further improved the device’s functionality. The purpose of this device is to turn out what is lost or wanted by receiving the user’s imagination.
I think this artifact is interactive because when users use it, they need to spin the switch, and then the TV will shake and give the feedback that provides the items. So this artifact can get the information and give some feedback, and the earphone and the TV can also create an interaction that delivers information from each other.
Our group involved in the cardboard workshop together, and we made the TV during that time. And I make the earphone. For the processing, I first cut down four circles, and I intended to put two circles together, so then the earphone would not look very thin. However, it was not user-friendly when I tried to make that because our ears are convex. I needed to make a cover for the ears.
And for the connection section, because The size of everyone’s head is different, so I initially wanted to make a shank that could be retracted. But it was not possible with cardboard alone. So I came up with the idea of using two extra strips of paper to connect the ear cups to the top of the headset. The additional strips are softer, and when the user takes them, they will naturally hang down according to the curvature of the head, thus achieving the effect of fitting the shape of each person’s head. I also add three signals for the earphone, which can connect to the TV (with the exact three colour bottom on it).
In order to achieve the integrity of the artifact, we added a solid headset stand on the side of the TV to reflect that the headset and the TV are closely related.
And for the items which showed in the performance, we cut down a part of the cardboard so that we can replace the items inside. And we print the pictures of the items and use a tape to fix them on the stick, and then user can easily grab it from the screen.
Another challenging component is the spin switch. We use tape to fix this knob.
Some process pictures and our mock performance:
Success and failure of our project:
From my perspective, I think that the success of our interactive artifact is that we provided an easy understanding and an exciting show for our audience. We explicitly showed what we wanted to convey through the television and our performance. And for the failure, we do not design some vivid story plots. We only showed the function of our artifact, and this artifact exists a bug that if people want to get something illegal, it will break the balance of our society, so I think it can be improve about what items people can get from it.
A critical analysis and assessment of a performance from the Mirror:
I really appreciated the group’s design of the mirror. The mirror is connected with the story “The Ones Who Walk Away from Omelas”. And there is a girl who lives in the mirror, and the girl can simulate and reflect the person act who is standing in front of the mirror. I really like the performance of this mirror, especially the part of lipstick. And also the dressing of the mirror character is very interesting, which fit the setting perfectly. And connected with the story, the disabled child live in the room which is similar as the world in the mirror. I enjoy this design not only because it is creative, but also it revels something of the real life world. And it’s closely relevant to the story. Therefore I think it fulfill the criteria of the assignment. However, I think this mirror can be more interactive, because the interaction only showed by people’s performance and I think that it’s better to make some bottom and items which people can touch and use.
