Week 5: Design Discussion (James Dyson)

James Dyson had always been driven to invent and design, as he says it himself: “I was a curious kid, eager to find out how objects work.” Through Dyson’s works I could capture simplicity, elegance/luxury and most importantly its eye to details and functionality. Making emphasis on the functionality aspect; Dyson viewed innovation to be closely link to improving the efficiency and technology that is related to the performance of a product.

Dyson has been characterized by its innovative focus they give to their products, specially within home appliances and technology. The brand has gained more awareness because of its vacuums and ventilators. Dyson stands out from its competitors due to their advance engineering and high quality materials.

Although this brand has been well know in the market for years, it was not until the Dyson Airwrap launched that I became aware of the brand; and turns out to be the design I like the most.

This product is recognized for its capacity of drying and styling the hair without extreme heat as other styling products like curling irons or straighteners do. It uses a controlled air system to create different hair styles with its  various exchangeable accessories. The reason I like this product is because of how much time it saves me what use to be done with three different hair tools now I can do it with one device, although I get how can some people view the attachable accessories as an inconvenience I would rather this much than having to plug an unplug a hairdryer, straighter and curling iron. Beside this “complaint” I have also heard how it can be hard to use for some customers, but what I truly like is that they have in-store services that target the consumers needs like in person consultations on how to use the Dyson Airwrap.

The design I personally don’t find that interesting or revolutionary from Dyson its their hairbrushes. The brush on the left looks like the one I got from Miniso. I understand that what makes them “special” in the market is the brand behind them and also the materials. However I wouldn’t spent around $40 USD for a detangling tool. The description of the product from Dyson’s website seemed to me as if to oversell a non-so- innovative product.

Rafael de Cardenas is a name that stands out when talking about latinos in design. He is a Cuban-American designer and architect recognized for his work in decorative arts, furniture and interior design. In my opinion, his background brings a unique approach to his creations; he is well known for him dynamic and eclectic designs that often combine cultural references and materials that turn out into a sophisticated concept. He works at a wide range of projects form houses and commercial interiors.
