“The ‘shadow’ is a concept first coined by Swiss psychiatrist Carl Jung that describes those aspects of the personality that we choose to reject and repress. For one reason or another, we all have parts of ourselves that we don’t like—or that we think society won’t like—so we push those parts down into our unconscious psyches. It is this collection of repressed aspects of our identity that Jung referred to as our shadow self.”
For the diptych project I am going to convey the concept of “The Shadow,” first discussed by Carl Jung. It will be interesting to show the way the shadow impacts the way the world is perceived. Picture one will be of a person standing looking away from the ground. Picture two will be a photoshopped shadow which will include a collage of different people, things, and experiences. The idea that the two pictures convey when together is that the way we see others is often a reflection of ourselves. The direction of the person’s view in picture two shows that people often ignore this truth. I am not sure how I will do setting or lighting yet but after creating a contact sheet I think my overall approach will be much more clear.
