Mini Project 2. Interactive Memories and Dreams

project title:Interactive Memories and Dreams

brief intro:This is a project that asks us to add animation to the self portrait of our partner.

coding:

1.Dog eyes move with mouse:

Actually I have no idea how to make its eyes move with mouse so I tried several times. Although I’m not very satisfied with the final effect,at least it works. I just calculate the location of the eyes using the location of the mouse. I think using if(mouseX>a |  | mouseX<b) might be better but I don’t know how to achiever that (I tried).

2.Bubbles and heart🩵💙🫧🫧🫧

It is so fortunate that when I’m searching for  the reference of the text,I discovered that emoji can be used as text and that’s convenient,so I use emoji twice.

Partner’s feedback:I like this project, especially the blue heart background that appears when I click the mouse (I love the color blue, and I’ve even dreamt of blue scenes before). The way the little dog gazes also follows the mouse movement! If I have any suggestions, I think the changes in the dog’s eyes could be more pronounced, and the bubbles could move in different directions. But overall, I really like it!

Reflection:

Actually the dog eyes part can be done better and I’m eager to figure out how to make it move vividly next time.

Mini project 1: Drawing with Code

link to my work:https://editor.p5js.org/Cicci_Shao/sketches/bdnhn83j0

mywork:

This is a documentation of my first work in creative coding lab, where I created a self-portrait via JavaScript.

This is the sketch of my work, which I painted them before I started coding. As for reasons why I want my self-portrait to be a bird is that many of my high school friends thought that my characteristic is just like a bird, extroverted and lively.

This is the selfie that inspired my choice.

As for the coding part, I worked really hard with the part ‘rotate’, although it is not taught in class, I still feel like it can make my work more lively. The rotation of the whole portrait works, but the rotation of the wing, which I intend to make it feel like it’s waving, doen not work. I tried ‘rotate(PI/1.2)’, but however hard I alter the x and y, the shape doesn’t show up in the frame, so I give up.

For my portrait, I use ellipse, ciecle and arc. I worked on the bird’s beak for really long and finally figure out that use the combination of two arcs works well and looks lovely.

Reflection: In this project, I gradually got familiar with JavaScript and started learning how to code. More importantly, I found drawing with code interesting. Through coding, different shapes appear as I want. I hope to gain a deeper understanding of JavaScript through the oncoming projects.

Cicci’s Visual Metaphor Documentation

A.Concept & Story

The video is mainly talking about chasing dreams. In the beginning, the girl is among the audience and gives a bunch of flowers to the dancer she appreciates. However, she is torn because she wants to be a dancer too instead of one of the anonymous audience, so she chooses a different path to becoming a dancer. Eventually, she receives a bunch of flowers from others, which implies that she has succeeded.

We are inspired by The Road Not Taken, a poem written by Robert Frost. The poem is about life choices. The main character is walking in the forest and there are two paths in front of him/her. Both of the roads are equally beautiful but he has to choose one to continue his journey. He/she is torn between the two options. In the end, he/she chooses the one less traveled by and moves on.

At first, we want to be literal and convey the poem directly. We took some shots like the elevators and noodles to imply the two roads. However, we found it too obvious and boring so we changed our mind and created a new plot that could both echo the poem and show something more novel.

The reason why we want to explore the topic is that all of us face hundreds and thousands of life choices during our entire lives but we can only experience one path in life. Every path you choose will lead to a different ending and there is no way back. We want to use this story to tell the audience that if you choose the path less traveled, something unexpected may appear and give you a nice surprise. So don’t be afraid to be the minority and be brave to chase your dream!

B. Creation Process & Execution

i. shooting process

We want to be literal and convey the poem directly at first. We took some shots like the elevators and noodles to imply the two roads. However, we changed our mind and just as Cicci mentioned, we created a new plot that can both echo the poem and show something more interesting. For the new plot, all the shootings mainly took place in two places: the campus and the park near our school. At the campus, since our main plot is about dancing, we took advantage of the final performance of the dance class and took some shots there with the special lighting. At the park near our school, we mainly focused on establishing shots. We spent some time looking for the perfect background and took some shots from different angles and even at different distances. Additionally, flowers are used in many shots, serving as a clue in the whole story. During the first part of the shoot in the park, we used two pieces of organza covering the camera to create the vagueness of imagination.

ii. techniques used
In terms of the technical achievements, there were six main adjustments we made to diversify our scenes.

First, for the title, we used the fast blur effect and adjusted the speed so that it played backwards and produced an effect of appearing.

Then, by creating a “mask” in the premiere, we can cover anything we want. And by adding “mask path”, we can make the mask move as we want. Therefore, the title disappears as the character walks.

Second, you may notice that we created the transition from black and white to color twice in the film. To make this happen, we applied the calculations effect. Next, change the input channel to gray and click on the timer button to create the first keyframe. Then, position the time head to the time when the transition is completed and change the second layer opacity value to 100% to create the second keyframe. As a result, the transition is completed.

The last scene where the colors appear slowly as the main character moves along. The techniques involved are basically the same. The only difference is that an extra “mask” is needed to have such an effect.

We also adjusted the color of our scenes to make them fit the concept better by opening Lumetri color from the window and adjusting the saturation, color temperature, exposure, contrast, etc.

Finally, for the credits part, we used the scrolling text by double clicking the text and click on “Roll” in the Essential Graphics column.

These are the main technical achievements we made.

C.Aesthetics & Results

Our project turned out to be good.

As for our camera language, we use the movie effect in iPhone and a stabilizer to shot all the scene. We also tried many angles apart from extreme close shot which are familiar to us most, like establishing shot and medium shot. We captured these shot mainly in Houtan Park as our metaphor part in the video, which seems dreamlike.

As for color correct, the main idea is to make the color of the flower more distinct and the metaphor shots more dreamlike. As for the flower part, saturation is about +150 and the contrast is about +70, which makes the color more eye-catchy.

For metaphor part, we applied organza to cover the phone camera like a filter. But the effect  is not fully achieved, as organza will make the lights in the scene to be star-shaped but unfortunately the day we went shooting is a cloudy day. However, the organza makes the scene seem dreamlike and the color when gold organza is used is really fancy.

D.Collaboration

This is the first group final I accomplished in college and I felt really happy to collaborate with Lizzie , who is a good and responsible partner to work with. I still remembered the night I had dessert with her, sitting on the floor and in the dark after finish editing the project.

In our group work, Lizzie set the shooting plan and worked hard to carry out the plan, which I thing is worthing learning for me. Carrying out things according to the plan is an equality I appreciated.

We went to many places outside campus to shot and we both felt happy to work hard together to complete something. We shared that feeling and that’s what makes me think working with Lizzie is really happy.

Lizzie is willing to learn things. The concept and idea of visual part is mainly designed by me and Lizzie is responsible for shooting and solving technical problems while shooting.

Her idea on composition is really good, which enables us to capture beautiful shots for our metaphor part. Moreover, she solved technique problems really quick, which is helpful.

Moreover, we are of high efficiency when we work together and I really like the feeling working with my partner.

That’s it.

Communications lab brought me so much joy this semester. I learned many skills in this course and I will definitely miss it.

Visual Metaphor Proposal-Cicci&Lizze

Visual Metaphor Proposal

  1.   Project Title: The Road Not Taken
  2. Team Members: Lizzie & Cicci

III.  Concept | Storyline:

1). What is the piece (article, poem, story) for the narrative voice over?  Or who are you going to interview?

Poem: The Road Not Taken By Robert Frost

Voice over: A boy & a girl (Dialogue)

       2). What’s the story about?

It’s about life choices. The main character is walking in the forest and there are two paths in front of him. Both of the roads are equally beautiful but he has to choose one to continue his journey. He/she is torn between the two options. In the end, he/she chooses the one less traveled by and moves on.

In general, the story expresses an idea that facing hundreds and thousands of life choices, we can only experience one path in life and if you choose the path less traveled by, something unexpected may appear and give you a nice surprise.

3). Which part of the story are you going to focus on?

The part he/she is torn. We’ll use many different shots to symbolize the difficulty of making such a decision.

4). What kind of style/aesthetics are you going to pursue?

We want it to be implicit, profound and thought-provoking because what we are going to express is kind of philosophical. We also want it to be beautiful and pleasant to match with the artistic conception created by the poem itself.

  1. Execution Plan:

1). What equipment are you going to use when shooting the movie? (cell phone, DSLR camera, sound recorder, stabilizer..)

Phone, DSLR camera, sound recorder, stabilizer.

2). Which locations will it be shot at? When is it? Day time/night/unknown? Why?

A place with lots of trees. Either a botanical garden or a forest park. Daytime.

Two escalators. One is crowded and the other is less crowded. Daytime probably.

Two bowls of noodles. One has an egg on it and the other has nothing but a lot of treasures buried under it. Daytime.

      An Fu road. Nighttime.

3). What are some challenges you might encounter and how will you prepare?

We need to shoot a set of different materials and it’s a lot of work. So we are going to start early and collect them in advance.

We can’t get the shot we want. We’ll take our time and try more times

4). How will you collaborate? How will you divide work? (Gantt Chart below*)

      See the Chart below.

Cicci’s Memory Soundscape Documentation

1.concept

The memory I want to pick as my subject is a period in my high school. I used to have the habit of cycling after the Friday courses ended, which is a great chance for me to enjoy the sound of the breeze and the sunset with a relaxed mind. I loved the sunlight and the shadows, the shadow of which changes rather quickly at dusk, which always makes me think of the glinting sea, so besides the normal sound I heard when cycling, I will also use the sound of water to describe the change of light to create a holistic picture.

2.process-problem-solution

I collected the sounds in urban area of shanghai. i asked my mom to take me on the electric power cart and I just held the tascam. We went through many streets in Shanghai, where enables me to collect the sound on the road.

As for the sound representing the lights,I got the temple bell sound from the calm corner and I got the water sound by filling a tub with water.

One problem I met with was that the sound of the wind is too noisy and harsh, so I tried to use FFT at first, however, I found that it doesn’t work. Then I came up with the idea of blowing the mic, fortunatly it works.

The second problem is that the sound of the chain of the bike is too quiet to record, so I intended to replace that with the sound of pushing the button of an art knife. It really works but not so successful.

3. to improve

If I had much time, I think I will double-check  my work and simplify it. Because as long as I have heard it playing loud once, I will find out that it was a little bit too noisy, even though I left that noise on purpose.

I think the problem lies in the number of the tracks, maybe using only 3~4 tracks to create the metropolis vibe with be better.

4.reflect on feed back

Firstly, the professional suggestions are really helpful and innovative. I will try to think from a more artistic perspective, like adding more “myself” into my memory. I will add the sound of heart beat or breath into my work next time.

Secondly,I learned much from peer review.

1.It can be more organized and specialized, as it sounds a little bit noisy and messy. It also sounds like a restaurant, so maybe I can add more sounds peculiar to city life and cycling.(Dana,Irene,CC)

2.Control the volume.(Natalya)

3.Add more sound effects(Joy)

4.Contribute more to emotions.(CJ)

Cicci’s Five Obstructions watching response

  • What are the precise rules of each of the obstructions?

#Obstruction1

1.No single edit may be longer than 12 frames.

2.Questions that ”What is this human doing? Why has the music?” should be   answered.

3.The film should be shot in Cuba

4.The film should be shot without any set.

#Obstruction2

1.Go to one of the most miserable places.

2.Go close to really harrow things and scenes close to real life.

3.Jorgen plays character Claus Nissen.

4.The meal should be there.

#Obstrution3(a punishment)

1.completely free of remake the second film back to Bombay

#Obstruction4

1.cartoon

#Obstruction5

1.Bring things full circle

2.Jorgen does nothing expect dircting

3.Jorgen should read a designated script Lars Von Trier wrote for him

4.can only use materials filmed in former 4 flims

  • How does Jorgen cope with the obstructions?

1.repetition/reverse left and right

2.putting a half-transparent broad between the miserable and the perfect

3.(free from obstructions)

4.looking for a man who is expert in making cartoon

5.Restricting the color to only black and white

  • What is the effect on the movies he produces?

1.an interesting old leth film, the worst limitation become the one that makes the film interesting.

2.A film contrasting the rich, perfect and the miserable, however, the delicate thought of putting a half-transparent broad between made the film against the rules.

3.guessing what different people is thinking

4.He managed to make a cartoon.

5.The black and white expression of the scenes in previous flims with the narration background music greatly summarzies the whole flim and also serves as an end of the whole flim.

  • My own thought: The trial is really interesting and it is the first time that  I have seen films made out of obstructions instead of plots. The artistic expression methods are worthing learning and reflecting, which may help broaden my thought when filming my own “5 Obstructions”.

Cicci’s reading response-The Uncertainty of Documentarism

  • Steyerl talks about how the “unbroken belief” of the documentary form is challenged. What does Steyerl mean by this? Certain movies and films are based on a true story.  How does truth inform fiction? How might fiction inform the truth?

  • Steyerl suggested us that we should still think about the authenticity of the documentary even if it is a sort of “unbroken belief”,as it could still be changed as for military or political purpose in digital era.
  • things in fiction is not true, the context of the fiction is always the truth, so in this way the truth informs the fiction. The fiction was created according to the background and what’s going on in reality.
  • Fiction is created by human, who are subjective, so teh fiction may be created out of certain purpose, so it may inform truth purposefully, which may arouse some anxiety,or maybe dipict the hope for future and inform truth in a positive way.

  • What is the significance of the authenticity and representation of the truth in the media that you consume on a daily basis? What is the role of a live broadcast?

  • Authenticity is really necessary, without which may lead to massive misunderstanding of the reality. Representation of the truth in the mediais what we are currently struggle with, especially on social media, which is an vital part that can lead to a peaceful, positive media environment.
  • Live broadcastplays the role of a official announcer. Different from social media where everyone can post something, live broadcast requires strict check, so it’s authenticitiy is highly ensured(but still not 100%).Live broadcast is far more eligible than any other media.

Cicci’s Photo Diptych Documentation

A.name: Cicci

Project: What’s hiding underneath

B.Concept: Part 1 displays our stereotype of sharks——fierce, scary……However, part 2 appears totally different images of shark. They are cute and friendly. They make friends with other animals like monkeys and pandas. Some of them are also taking showers and rowling a tub boat, which is really adorable. The first part is what the sharks look like and how we usually think of them regarding their appearence while part 2 ,in contrast, shows the imaginery inner part of sharks, which enlights us that we shouldn’t define others only by apearence and what others truely are may be totally differnet from what we suppose him to be at first sight.

C.Process

(1)This picture was taken during my second visit to IKEA, a furniture shop. I’m aiming at capturing the figure of various shark dolls and this picture is what I saw when I walked into the fluffy doll department. When I raised my head, the three sharks hung on the ceiling coincidently formed a very vivid state, so I just shot.

(2)Firstly, I pick out the pictures where the piles of sharks are in “cages” and it is really crowded in the cage as some sharks are even distorted. Then I seperate them into small parts and then put these small parts into the final work as its background. I also adjusted the transparency of the backgroud to ensure it won’t be too eye-catchy.

Secondly, I use the lasso tool to get the images of differnet sharks in different pictures and then put them randomly on the background. I also arrange them a lttle bit to create the freedom vibe.

Thirdly, I add more animals onto the picture. Actually when I come up with this idea,I think that it is too crazy and maybe the final picture will be a little wired. But I still try it, so naughty monkeys and panda which managed to sneak into sharks by wearing a shark coat appeared.

Then it comes the last step of toning, which is a challenge for me, so I searched th Red and tried several times to learn about white balance, exposure, contrast, highlights, shadows, whites and blacks in the camera raw filter. Then I keep trying and finally reached the effect I want.

D.Conclusion: I will adapt more elements and different types of sharks. Or adding more flowers and adjust their transparency to make the picuture looks more artistic and vivid. I will also dicover more effects in PS and I really want to try the “stylish” function. I believe they will make the picture look more innovative.
