The performance was meant to be like the simulation of a storm.
The development of the musical instrument was not that complex. The tools ken and I used for our performance were a piece of wood and the clean tool for the soldering iron. To explore different sounds from different textures, we examined many materials and found the wood and iron wires to be the best materials to deliver our performance, because it can create a feeling of metal. The sound created by iron wires using piezo disk can deliver a kind of electrical and jazz sound, in sharp contrast to the simple but distinctive sound created by wood.
The Soldering Iron Cleaning Tool I used for performance, which yielded some dramatic effects.
I was amazed by the sound the cleaning tool can create and therefore decide to incorporate it in my performance.
In this performance, Ken’s part and my part are supposed to create such a contrast effect. He mainly plays the static rhythm and my part included more variation of that rhythm. The flow of the time was represented in the static rhythm and the variations represented the storm. The concept was simple, but I would like to elaborate more on the delivery of the composition of the music itself. To start with, I don’t think X-men had made the best delivery for this music. I feel like the general composition of the music was rather simple, without too many hooks that catch the audience’s attention. Ken and I seemed to be playing our parts separately, without enough interactions between the two layers of the music. Besides, I was using the clean tool for the soldering iron to create sound using the piezo disk, and this means I was actually playing a musical instrument I made. Therefore, I should be rather familiar with it and come up with the best way to deliver music with that instrument. My technique involved in the performance appeared not to be enough, and more research on how to use that musical instrument needs to be done.
Generally speaking, I will take every performance as a lesson to learn. In the next performance, Ken and I will set aside more time to prepare and aim for better delivery.
