Assignment 4: Karakuri
In this assignment, we constructed three distinct paper karakuri mechanisms, each designed to exhibit a unique pattern of repetitive motion. Working collaboratively in pairs, we engineered one mechanism to execute a continuous vertical movement, another to perform a repetitive horizontal motion, and a third that swayed back and forth using a sophisticated linkage system. To add a humorous touch, we decorated each mechanism with a whimsical caricature of our professor, which brought a lighthearted element to our creations. The process underscored the critical importance of precise measurements—every millimeter and fractional increment was crucial. As we meticulously assembled these mechanisms from card stock paper, the necessity for accuracy became increasingly apparent, especially as we aimed for perfect synchronization and smooth operation in our karakuri models. This assignment was not only a practical exercise in mechanical principles but also an engaging exploration into the functionality and design of paper mechanics, enhanced by our personalized artistic expressions.
